Safe to come off the Pill now?

I'm 48 and have been on the pill for 30 years except v brief periods with two pregnancies. Both times I conceived immediately, I also accidentally conceived with a coil (ectopic, so lost an ovary). Then accidentally conceived again just because I missed two pills (termination). So I've always been superfertile.

6 years ago I had chemo - not sure whether that has an effect on fertility.

So here I am, 48, one ovary, maybe clapped out by chemo, and I want to stop popping the pill. GP says there's no reason to come off it, as I don't get any side effects, but surely I should be able to stop at some time?

DH loathes condoms and it would seem a bit unfair to ask him to have a vasectomy if the chances of pregnancy are as infinitisimal as I suspect.
Anyone any advice?

Can your gp send you for a blood test to check?

They can only do the blood test after you've been off the pill for a few months, unfortunately.

Ah...sorry. Hope you can sort something out.

Would Dh not use condoms just until you can be sure you are over that hurdle? it wouldn't be forever afterall.

I think he's going to have to.

You are considered fertile for 2 years after a final period if under 50 , or 1 year if over 50.

If your periods haven't stopped, then you can conceive. Lots of women have conceived with 1 ovary.

Unless you want a child, use contraception until your periods are truly over.
