Hair loss- not too trivial I hope.

I am 46 and am experiencing a few things mentioned here, closer together periods, the odd night sweat, definitely forgetfulness and clumsiness. So far not too bad but I have noticed that my hair on the top of my head is getting very thin. I am noticing a lot of scalp, typically in a male pattern baldness way. I wear it shoulder length still so it is disguised but if it were short it would look very obvious. Is this normal, likely to get worse and is it worth troubling my gp with? Any advice or similar stories would help, otherwise I may have to consider transplanting the hairs from my chin onto my scalp!

It could be alopecia, which can often be stress related. Have you lost any body hair at all, that seems to happen towards menopause. My eyebrows are almost non-existent now, the hairs are so fine, and I've very little pubic hair! Head hair is good, though.

I would see the dr anyway, I think there are some treatments they can give. And don't discount shorter hair styles, with a clever cut and colour, and use of styling products fine hair can be made to look so much more.

It's not normal ,no.

Go and see your dr. You could be lacking in something in your diet, or it could be hormonal. You could try something like Regain for women and see if that helps.

Hello, thanks both for answering. I don't think I'm stressed tho' will be by next week with 2 teenagers at home! Sadly all body hair is still rampant. My Nana was very very thin on top and I wonder if it may be in the genes. I will see gp after hols. Just feel it may seem too trivial and don't want to waste her time.

Def. genes as is men's patterns of baldness.

I suspect yr dr might give you meds- my son tried them as he was thinning on top at 20. Trouble is a side effect for men is impotence, not sure what happens to women.
if you can afford it you could go to a good trichologist like Philip Kingsley.
It's not trivial- our hair is very closely bound up with who we are and our self-esteem, and female baldness is not a nice thing to have. Good luck.
