Moving to Dorset from the Highlands

FIZZCAT · 12/04/2005 20:14

Hi

I am relocating from the Highlands in Scotland to Dorset in June for my hubbys new job. I am keen to get to know other mums and get to know a bit about Dorset before arriving.

I have a lovely but stubborn eleven month old son, two cats and a mothers sense of humour, (i just laugh at everything, (especially having porridge flung in my hair, not!!!)

I have just gotto find other mums to chat to/meet up with the prevent me going gaga.

My hubby starts work with Julas House Hospice in early June, and as yet we havent even found somewhere to live, arhhhggggg, so any advice as to nice locations would be good. We will be renting initially before buying somewhere.

So if anyone is out there in the area please get in touch, it will make this huge move less scary.

Bye Fizz cat

Fizzcat - vvv jealous that you have dolpins! Sorry can't offer that down here (bit thin on the ground in Bournemouth!).

Be great to meet you when you get here along with the other Dorset mums - we're not as mad as we may seem! (well, I wont mention names ..... I'm just looking forward to the wine again having just had DS2 4 wks ago ...... let me at it!!!!!!_

tamum · 07/05/2005 15:16

Just reading this in a haze of nostalgia- haven't anything remotely useful to contribute, but I grew up in Somerset, best friend lived in Marnhull, ex-bf went to school in Milton Abbas, go back to Dorest for holidays each year etc. I'm in Edinburgh so have gone the other way

I'd love to know where the dolphin beach is if you wouldn't mind revealing it!

Ringham135 · 08/05/2005 17:10

Hello, I live in Poole and am a maternity nurse. Does anybody know of anybody in this area who needs my help? Take care, Raechel

You can email me at [email protected]

Surfermum · 08/05/2005 20:52

Fizzcat - I haven't forgotten the paper to send to you. The paper came Friday but I didn't have any large enough envelopes, so I'm taking it to work tomorrow. I picked up a Julia's House newsletter in the local shop for you too!

FIZZCAT · 10/05/2005 22:42

Hello

sorry for the delay, DS had a stinker of a cold, then passed it on to both the hubby and me, great!!! That combined with the madness that ensues when packing up a house to move accross country, Arghhhhhh.

The house will go to a closing date in about 10 days, so the pressure is on to show as many folks around as possible.

DS is NOT helping, and insisits on blowing very rude, loud rasberries at everyone and waving goodbye to them as soon as they arrive. Hardly the HOUSE DOCTOR reccomends!!!

Beki, hi, sorry for he delay. I have seen some cracking houses around the Bridport/Dorchester area, I am trying to work out just how bad a commute it would be for DH. I looked at one in a place called Portesham. What is that village like.

Hi Sufermum. no worries, I will be glad to get it whenever, just make sure I repay you with a drink once I am settled down South. The JH newsletter is a good idea.

I have been doing some research on baby back packs and guess I will be buying a bush baby carrier, so as to hike along the coast!! That should keep me fit.

Tamum- Hi, okay. I will tell, its on the Black Isle, a short drive North of Inverness at a place called Channery Point, Its quite famous. Please go, you wont believe me until you see them with your own eyes, its awesome.

They really do swim that close to the beach, I think the best time to get there is the turn of low tide, it creates a rip tide that moves fish into the area, the dolphins come to feed. We have seen up to six with two babies. The strange thing is, they actually come close to look at you, mind blowing. Just go and see them!!!!

Merlin, one day take a trip up to see them, one of those things you have to do, see dolphins that close outside of Disney World!!! I would love to meet up as soon as I get unpacked, I will be needing a couple of drinks easily

Rachal Ringtone (have I got that right?), I will let you know, if hubby and I can get ovet the exhaustion of moving etc we will try to conceive this year, (mind you chance would be a fine thing, we are both so tierd we prefer sleep, how sad , so your services may come in handy. I was thinking for the next baby of looking into finding a Doula, let me know what you think of them.

Oh yes, I am so not hubbys favourite at the moment. I managed to lock my car keys, all DS food and drink, lunch, purse, coats etc in the boot of the car while in town today. I then had to go and beg for 60pence from a shop to ring hubby, who drove 20 miles to rescue me, eeekkk. Anyone else done something really stupid this week??

On that note I am off to bed

Hi Fizzcat - hope things aren't too frantic for you. Good luck with the move and let us know when you get down here.

lucyep · 21/05/2005 19:43

Hi Everyone

I hope you don't mind me coming in on this thread. I've only just found MN lol!
I'm Bev and live in Whitsbury, Fordingbridge not far from Dorset honest!
Fizzcat - I wish I'd known that Julias House had opened, we've just got our daughter into Naomi House Children's Hospice at Sutton Scotney, Winchester - Julias would have been ALOT closer!

For everyone I've got 5 children (I must be mad). 2 from my first marriage Boy 14 and Girl 11. Then Girl 5 who is poorly, Girl 3 and Boy 20 months. Lived in Sherborne for a few years before the 5 yr old was born and moved back up this way (where I come from) to be closer to Soton General for her.

Looking forward to getting to know you (if you are all ok with that!) Bev x

FIZZCAT · 07/06/2005 22:09

HELLO

Well I finally made it, several hundred miles, sleepless nights, tantrums and tears, and that was just me!!! Been in Wareham for five days and really like it. Rental house is tiny, but will suit until we find a place to buy. Wareham has a cople of baby groups that I will investigate.

DS is still worried about all the upheaval, and is a bit stressed, read that, is clinging to mummy like a limpet.

Sufermum, lets meet up one day soon, geographically I havent a clue which way is up, but provided I get a weeks notice I will navigate myself somewhere!!!! (If only you knew how bad my driving was!!!!

lucyep, it would be graet to meet up, are you ever around this way. Sounds like you have got a handful there!

It would be great to meet up at a place where babies and kids can play, where Mums can main line coffee & gossip etc. I have heard that Farmer Palmers is good, any other sugestions welcome.

Anyay, we are living out of boxes, no point in totally unpacking as we may move again soon. Have started looking at houses to buy, a long and painful task, especially with a depressed and home sick 1 yr old in tow.

Okay, I am off for a bath BUT CANT WAIT TO HEAR FROM THE DORSET MUMS, esepcially as I am now one of them

speak soon

fizzcat in a little house in Wareham

Fizzcat, I'd forgotten about this thread, sorry. Glad you've moved. I will start a Farmer Palmers meetup thread now and see if we can get a few Dorset people together

DelGirl · 09/06/2005 19:21

Welcome to Dorset Fizzcat. apologies but i've not read the whole thread yet.

Just thought I'd let you know that the Wareham festival is on in July and runs for a week. I think its the 25-29 but it could be the week before. Anyway, the highlight, if you're into live music is on Wareham Quay on the 23rd which is a Saturday. It's fantastic and a must see.

Hope you and your family enjoy living here

bunny2 · 09/06/2005 19:27

Def up for Farmer Ps if a weekend - ds loves it.

Welcome Fizzcat

FIZZCAT · 10/06/2005 20:44

Hi

The festival sounds really good. I am soooo in love with wareham, have already been to a mother and toddler group and the leisure centre baby activity morning. Having great fun just pushing DS about and expooring. You have to realise that Scotland was lovely but just lots of mountains where I lived, so I have become a social hermit

Certainly making up for it now though.

Desperately need a haircut, I resemble a highland cow at present.

I think if we can we would like to buy in Wareham, its just got everyting I need and is within easy reach of everything else.

DS has coincided the start of his toddler tantrums and walking unaided with the house move, I am a nervous wreck, if he isnt falling down accidentally, he is throwing himself to the ground in major tantrum mode!!!

Any sugestions as to how to chill him out after the move woulkd be welcome

We went to Putlake Farm the other day and he loved the soft play area, had to physically wrestle him out of it.

Farmer Palmers sounds good fun

Del girl, we have found the quay, DS loves the ducks I quite like the proximity of the pubs!!!! Great location for music!

We have six house viewings tommorow, DS will be beside himself with rage at being stuck in his car seat, so I will have to schedule in a bit of Duck feeding am and pm to keep him happy.

Okay, I have a mountain of washing to do, washing machine has only just arrived!!!! speak soon

DelGirl · 10/06/2005 20:55

glad you;re enjoying it fizzcat. Sorry I can't give you any advice re your ds but he might enjoy the fest

It really is a great night on the quay. Picture this:

A big stage set up quite high with the whole quay full of people, yachts moored alongside with people dancing. The bridge usually is 3 people deep too as is the other side of the river as you can hear the band over there. Lots of beer and bbq food and in all the years i;ve been going there has never ever been a hint of trouble. All this going on as the sun goes down and the band is brilliant. btw i'm not their groupie or promotor

DelGirl · 10/06/2005 20:57

b*gger, just realised i'm not going this year cos i'm at a wedding.

FIZZCAT · 10/06/2005 21:05

I cant believe after all that you arent going, thats mad. Cancel or relocate the wedding!!!! They could always move the reception to that priory hotel place!!

We are renting just behind the Quay, in Church Street so are withing stumbling distance to get home, so yipeeee.

Are you watching the Falmer Palmer meet up thread, a few people have clicked in.

Speak soon

DelGirl · 10/06/2005 21:09

not sure about the farmer palmers yet. will have to see what date it is and dd is only 8 weeks on sunday anyway.

yeah, the wedding is near dorchester so it would be on my way back but I shall be getting a babysitter for the daytime. Would feel bad if I went to the fest in the eve and not the wedding. Having said that, i can take dd with me. I cant take her to the wedding. Maybe!!!

DelGirl · 10/06/2005 21:11

oh and also forgot to mention that all the money raised goes to multiple sclerosis. You dont have to pay but people go round with buckets. Think they raised about £10k last year!

FIZZCAT · 10/06/2005 21:19

Thats an amzing amount of cash. In a past life, before DS I was a fundraiser, so I am well impressed.

Really feel for you carrying in this heat, I am so glad I had DS in April, it was cool for most of my pregnancy, I dont know how i would cope in this heat, probably get very ratty.

Okay, I am off to do some washing, heaps and heaps of it to do, I Hate it!!!!

speak soon

FIZZCAT · 11/06/2005 20:06

Delgirl

I am such a moron, I thought DD meant due date, honestly if I had a brain I would be dangerous. So please ignore my last nutty message

Viewed lots of houses today, couple in Wareham I really liked, so fingers crossed.

catch you soon, he has just woken up!!!!

Surfermum · 12/06/2005 20:40

Hey Fizzcat! You got here at last. Welcome to sunny Dorset. Can't wait to meet you. I've just posted on the Farmer Palmer's thread. It's only 2 very small roundabouts away from you, so you'll be fine and it's well worth the trip -Farmer Palmer is a bit of a dish .... oh and dd loves it too. I did buy the season ticket for her honest .

FIZZCAT · 13/06/2005 20:31

HOW DISH IS HE!!!!!

My DS has decided that this is the week to walk, arghhhh, and perhaps more PAINFUL, call everyman he see's in the streets of Wareham Dada. I mean how embaresing, he did it to a really old chap today and the Doctor!!!, at least he saw the funny side. He obviously thinks that Dada means Man. Hope he grows out of that little trick soon.

Yep, Farmer Palmer sounds great, I can see me going the season ticket way, especially for those rainy days, (you do get them dont you????), I am in a state of shock with regards the sun, I mean I still had snow in Inverness!!!

Okay, got to dash

Cant wait to meet
