PillockOfTheCommunity · 04/01/2008 17:26

this Sunday we're not having a meet up as such, just passing some of my baby stuff onto JARM

Meet up will be a Friday night if that's ok with everyone else?

OP posts:
strawberrylace · 04/01/2008 17:35

oh that's ok (don't want to miss out, still getting used to the world of babies and mumsnet!) - a friday night is ok with me. With or without kids? just checking - either is ok with me....

jo25 · 04/01/2008 17:58

jo25 · 04/01/2008 20:03

Can I hijack your thread and ask you Suffolk mums some more questions about Ipswich and Suffolk as I will be moving there in the summer???

Dh and I stayed near to Ipswich for a 2 day trip last week. We sort of knew it would be the worst time to go. It all looked a bit bleak but what large town doesn't in the middle of winter. We liked the town centre and Christchurch park. Some of the villages and suburbs we looked at where we had thought we might like to live didn't do much for us - so we're back to thinking we'll live in the town centre and just enjoy the villages and countryside on the weekends.

We'd like an old house and prefer to be in the north or north east of Ipswich. It looks like one of those places where you have a nice street and then turn the corner and there is a not such nice street or area. Is there anything I should know about that estate agents might not share?

Can you tell me some positives about living in Ipswich and in Suffolk to get me excited about the move again? We'll be making another trip in February and then in Spring. I imagine the Spring trip will be lovely. Where could we visit in february to get us excited about the area? Can you recommend a pub/restaurant in the town and on the outskirts to go to when we visit in Feb? We'll be moving from the busy south coast.

I'm simply fishing for us much information as possible, good and bad.

I think I have exhausted the issue of schools. Can anyone recommend a nursery in Ipswich for a child who will just have turned 3 and who will have 2 years until they start school.

PillockOfTheCommunity · 05/01/2008 18:25

Puddleducks is where my collegues send their children and have nothing but praise for it

and it's just round the corner from the Oyster Reach, which they tell me is a good place to go for a meal

Over by the ski-slope on the outskirts of town.

I don't know much about the centre, I'm more of a countryside girl!

Hi TodayToday
I moved to Ipswich about 7 years ago for a job, and i've found Ipswich and Suffolk to be nice places to live in. There's more going on here than people think - theatres, cinemas, pubs, restaurants, seaside, history, all sorts of things!
I can't help much with the nursery as my DS is only 13weeks, but there are lots of good schools in the county (I used to work for the education department).
If you want old houses, and good schools, then east ipswich is the place to look for houses. You'll pay a bit extra for it, but Copleston and Northgate are the high school catchments to look for. There's a great bus route (route 66) which runs all day and night to the town centre and back from Martlesham down Woodbridge Road - every 15mins in the day, half hourly in the evening and hourly through the night!

strawberrylace · 05/01/2008 21:27

TodayToday (sorry about the double messages, I can't post long messages for some reason)
There's a great pub called the Maybush at Waldringfield (just off the A12 on the outskirts of Ipswich) which is next to the river if you want somewhere nice to eat. Then you could drive up the A12 to the coast - Aldeburgh (Snape Maltings are close by if you like classical music) or Southwold (great pier with old fashioned slot machines for kids). I am a big fan of the seaside, and there's a v famous fish & chip shop in Aldeburgh at the end of the high street.
Another good pub on the A12 just outside Ipswich is the Black Tiles at Martlesham. Both these pubs serve good food, welcome kids and are signposted (brown signs) from the A12.
In terms of places to eat in the town centre, there's a pizza express on Lloyds Avenue, and a whole street of restuarants on Silent St/St Nicholas Street - chains like Zizis and one-offs like Keos (i've not been in the latter with kids though).
HTH - let me know if you need to know anything else!

TodayToday · 06/01/2008 07:50

Thank you so much for your suggestions. I remember seeing signs for the Black Tiles at Martlesham. I think we'll definitely make time to check the coast out this time.

PillockOfTheCommunity · 06/01/2008 22:28

ooh, I love zizis

Was great to meet you yesterday mate! Sorry we didnt hang about for long, but had to get back for my bro and SIL coming over. Was only home long enough to take my shoes off and they turned up!

Thanks so much for the buggy and car seat, will get them out of the bus later for a proper look, bro and SIL didnt leave til gone 7pm last night by which time I was too knackered to do anything!

We need to get a meet up organised - COME ON PEOPLE!!!

strawberrylace · 07/01/2008 10:14

We could always have the meet up at Zizis (pizza/pasta place for those of you who haven't been)????

PillockOfTheCommunity · 07/01/2008 19:44

we could, only thing with that is that it's more expensive than just going to the pub

OP posts:
DanJARMouse · 07/01/2008 20:11

second that lol

not sure i can afford a meal at the moment!

strawberrylace · 07/01/2008 22:04

pub it is then . can only think of cricketers in town centre which doesn't play loud music at the weekend (mcgintys doesn't but its a bit of an 'old mans pub' i find)
