Help, really need mum's in Cambridge!

Hansmummy · 10/07/2007 02:08

I moved to Cambridge in May, and live on my own with a three year old.

I'm having problems attending toddler groups etc regularly because I have to go up to Leeds every second Thursday to Tuesday to take my dd to see her Dad and my mum, so am having HUGE problems meeting anyone.

I am getting to the point where I'm climbing the walls because the only person I get to talk to is my dd, and although I love her to bits I'm now getting a bit low, and so is she! We go to the park every day, but never see the same people there twice.

Anyone interested in just a quick meet up in the park or on a common with a football and a kite? It would just be good to see her playing with some other kiddies again, as she had a really good circle of friends at the old house and is starting to get a bit insular.

how come you ended up moving to cambridge?

BBBeeRose · 10/07/2007 09:57

.

Hansmummy · 10/07/2007 09:58

I'm starting a law degree at St Edmunds College in October, but had the summer off to spend with my three year old.
Our old house was in a concrete jungle so decided to spend the summer here instead and move early-I'm so glad I did, it's gorgeous!

sounds lovely - hope that someone will be along soon who is more local - but mumsnet is a good substitute.

3andnomore · 11/07/2007 13:04

HI there...not Cambridge, but we live in Corby, which isn't all that far. Think it took us about 30-40 minutes to Huntingdon which is just down the road from Cambridge....

MamaPyjama · 11/07/2007 14:07

Hi, I'm in Cambridge. Are you fairly central?

prufrock · 11/07/2007 14:12

I'm in Cambridge too (well, a village just south). Unfortunately I'm away for the whole summer so I'm not much good to you. But there are other Cambridgites here so keep bumping. Whereabouts do you live?

Hansmummy · 11/07/2007 21:57

Oh my goodness my post worked! There are Cambridgey's on here!

3andnomore-we have no car sadly so can't really pop out to you, but if you are ever nearby please let me know and we could meet up-I'm sure there will be a train to Huntingdon, or maybe even to Corby!

Mamapyjama-we're on Riverside, just next to Tesco's and the Museum of Technology, halfway between Midsommer and Stourbridge commons. We go to Jesus' Green park a lot (i.e. daily! We're a bit boring but at least Han meets other kiddies) so if you've been there at any point since May you may have seen us looking a bit lost!

Prufrock-Sounds a bit lovely-hope you're spending the Summer in the South of France in a Chateau or something. If you ever want to meet up when you get back let me know-I doubt I'll meet many mummies through the university so will always be on the lookout for more.

I would be happy to come to Cambridge, see if it has changed...we used to live Roysdon at one point (dh is in the army, so, moved a fair bit around over the years)...I actually learned to drive in Cambridge...now that was fun wiht all those cyclists, lol....

Hansmummy · 11/07/2007 22:13

Oh give me some tips-I've been trying to pass my test for FIVE YEARS! No joke! I'm a good driver too (he he!), just always stall on my test.

You should come over-there is so much on over summer, and the best bit is most of it's free! Think a lot has changed actually-obviously I wouldn't know but have heard a lot of people saying that a lot of things are new. I think it's super snazzy anyway, but I would say that!

I am in cambridge and would be happy to meet at Jesus Green. I have a 5 and 2 year old and another one on the way. I don't know that many people either because I work full time (i teach) and so now I am on my summer holls! HORRAH

3andnomore · 11/07/2007 22:18

Oh Cambridge is beautyful...if we could have afforded a house there, we would have moved there, I think...but as it was, twas out of question, lol...hohum....now, if we had had any sense in our younger years we would have grabbed the opportunity of buying much earlier, but well!
I had es in Rosie Maternity Hospital, btw...

As for passing driving test...I found it sooo nerveracking and failed the first time round and was sure I had failed the 2. time round too, was rather surprised when the guy said I passed, lol!

Meeting up in the holidays sounds like a good plan...and maybe the other people would also be interested

prufrock · 11/07/2007 22:28

Not South of France no, but 6 weeks in Caribbean - Barbados, Antigua and Nevis (not as posh as it sounds- we have family out there)

It took me 3 goes to pass my test - only did so 2 years ago when we moved out of London.

Have you discovered Funky Funhouse yet? As soft play areas go it's quite good, and the coffee is palatable. It's a good alternative for the inevitable rainy days over the summer.

I do actually know a lovely lady in Cherry Hinton with a 3 year old dd - she's away a the moment but I'll direct her here when she gets back - with me not monopolising her over the summer I'm sure she'll be up for dates at the park

pedilia · 11/07/2007 22:34

congrats cazzybabs [grin}

HM- would be happy to meet up, I am in Cambridge and know someone who lives just down the road from you!

Hansmummy · 11/07/2007 22:39

Oh you lovely people-I am no longer a recluse! Hurrah!

I haven't bought either-I think it will be a good ten years before I manage to get a mortgage-left my student phase a bit late I think! But saying that I'd never have got into Cambridge first time round.

Jesus Green sounds like a brill place to meet, because if you notice our hereditary scales then you can carry on walking past-he he!

Han is really into bigger kiddies at the mo, and loves to show littlies how to do things, so she would think that was amazing!

Played with some kiddies the other day who were so lovely, and she got so excited that they were including her she didn't tell me she needed a wee, so we had a huge accident, and then was too scared to tell the kiddies they were going too fast on the tyre swing and was sick everywhere-the first children that actually let her join in and they left v promptly, argh!

We're up in Leeds till Tuesday afternoon, but are free after that whenever anyone else is really.

Cazzybabs-when are you due? Do you know what you're having? I am in awe of mum's with more than one kiddie-I'm in bedlam constantly and I've just got one!

Oh wow wow wow, I am a socialite in the space of 9 hours! He he!

Prufrock-We found funky funhouse by accident, it was rather good actually-am v impressed that they don't limit you to 45 mins like they did at our old one. Am v happy to travel to Cherry Hinton-we cycled there a few weeks ago but on the way took Coldhams Road-argh! I'd only just got the bike too, what a learning curve THAT was! Found the cycle route back though and it was so gorgeous and leafy, mmm! And I don't care if family are involved-that is one snazzy holiday!

Pedilia-Someone near me? Really? I thought I was the only person around here barmy enough to have a child!

You are all so lovely-saving my poor child (you know really I mean me!) from almost certain insanity and complete social reclusiveness for all eternity!

Thank you all so much for being so friendly

We are in Arbury, so not far. I'd be happy to meet on Jesus green sometime. I have a ds(4) and dd(2).

Hansmummy · 12/07/2007 21:23

That would be great, especially now the weather seems to be on the up (please don't jinx it now!). It would be great for Han to be around boys as well as girls, as she's going through a boy wary phase at the mo so need to get her out of it!

Like I said, we are free till October-it may sound a little desperate, but at least it makes it easier for people to slot in times that they can do!

I'm afraid we're more into the freebie activites eg park, as my budget isn't used to Cambridge rental prices, but we also love to go swimming, or other reasonably priced (anything under £3 a shot, or £5 for a special occasion!) activities.

Just let me know a day that's good for you

Ello

Just sent you an email i am the "lovely" lady prufrock reffered to in her msg (thanks prufrock )

Msg i sent rather rambly as we are just back from camping in devon!

Hopefully you have been rescued from insanity by other mumsetters, and perhaps we'll talk soon.

x

Hi everyone, sorry I've taken so long to reply, am not at home until tomorrow so havn't been able to mumsnet-I've missed it!

We're going to the park at 2pm on Wednesday if anyone fancies it-I'll be the one in yellow crocs that always cringes the second Han climbs an inch off the ground-I need to learn to let go!

We've both got blonde shoulder length hair and Han has pink shoes as well if that helps? Don't know what we'd be wearing though as I'm not that organised! Han's got a pink daisy helmet and I've got a purple one if anyone gets there before us If you need a mob no or anything e-mail me xx

Can't make it this week [frantic end of term, panic, fluster], but maybe the end of next week?

Hansmummy · 16/07/2007 18:42

I am so glad I'm not at school stage yet-argh!

Just drop me an e-mail whenever you fancy a meet up-I check it pretty much daily, or drop me an e-mail and I'll e-mail you my mob no if that is easier-good luck with the end of term

Hi
I'm in Bury St Eds which isn't far down the road and we come to Cambridge quite often

Hansmummy · 17/07/2007 15:24

Wow, there are loads of us! Hurrah!

JoMa-let me know if you ever fancy meeting when you pop over-we've never been to Bury St Edmunds, but I'm sure we could fund a trip one day, but we'd make sure you liked us first-we wouldn't just barge over on you!

The weather has turned sour today, but as long as it's not totally throwing it down we will still be in the park tomorrow armed with a tea towel-I'd hate someone to show up and us not be there after all this!
