Nottingham area - suggestions of places to live!

My dh and I are going to be relocating from London to Nottingham (where he will be working) in about a year's time or less. We have a ds (23mths) and a dd (6 mths) and it would be really helpful to have some recommendations of areas to look for houses where there is stuff to do with kids, and also where there are good schools. Has anyone else done the same or a similar move? All very exciting but also nerve-wracking. I am currently thinking that it might all be a bit of a culture shock if we move to a small village and that therefore living in a small town or even a suburb may be better. Thoughts anyone????

I grew up in Lady Bay and I think its a fab place for kids. Countryside on the doorstep but a 20 min bus ride to town (so I could be very independent as a teenager!). Quite a strong 'community' feel to it, good local primary (well it was 30 years ago anyway!) Not especially posh or upmarket. Every time I go back I wish there were more places like that where I live now.

I should add that my personal preference is to live close to a city - I'm not a big one for small villages or glorious isolation - I prefer to be less car dependent. Though there are plenty of those in South Notts if that's what interests you.

Wilford? West Bridgford? Close to the river, good parks nearby, easy access to town.

Southwell is a beautiful Minster town about 12 miles fron Nottingham. Small enough to be in the middle of countryside, but some nice shops, and some very nice houses. The Minster school is one of the best in the area (secondary)

Thanks SOOO much for your replies - this is really helpful. He will be at the QMC.
I am not really sure whether I want to be in a village or town yet - need to weigh up the pros and cons really. My family live in Leicestershire so want to be fairly close to them. The villages off the A60 are therefore a possibility....any more views welcome and thanks again...
By the way, are there any nice areas of Nottingham itself that you would recommend?

There is an area right in the centre of Nottingham called The Park which is a private gated area mainly comprising of old victorian mansions which are either individual houses or divided into apartments, maisonettes. It's a five minute walk into the town centre and prob a 5/10 minute drive to the QMC. I lived there from 10 - 15 years old and had a ball! Not sure what the local schools are like that serve that area though - are you looking at private or local?

prufrock · 05/08/2004 21:16

Central Nottingham the Park is the only place to be - quite handy for QMC, and once you are up the hill it really doesn't feel like you are in a town, think Wimbledon Hill, but with much more friendly prices!

not entirely relevant but Nottingham has lots of really great shops in the city centre!

renaldo · 06/08/2004 13:07

the schools around the park are crap though, most people privately educate their kids. the villages, esp the 4 W's (Wysall willoughby Widmirpool and I forget the other ) and west bridgford have great schools

Tetley · 06/08/2004 13:32

I grew up 10 miles south of Nottingham (5 miles north of Loguhborough). Definately countryside & little villages, but with towns not too far away.

I loved it, & when I occasionally go back now (my parents don't live there any more) I realise what a lovely area it is - & how nice the village pubs are

Nottinghamshire is definately a lovely place to live. I'm feeling quite homesick for my youth writing this!

elliott · 07/08/2004 21:17

My brother lives in the Park and it seems a pretty poor place for kids - no playgrounds, they have to drive to get to any open space. And schools are a real problem there. Lady Bay is only a few miles from the city centre - really accessible.

lillymoo · 07/08/2004 22:38

WOOLLATON IN NOTTINGHAM IS REALLY NICE - LOVELY LARHE HALL N GROUNDS OPEN ALL YEAR ROUND (GROUNDS ARE FREE TO GET INTO) AND NOT TO FAR FROM THE QMC)

NOTTINGHAM IS DEF A GOOD PLACE TO LIVE IF NOT ONLY FOR THE SHOPPING - THERE'S A CASTLE - CAVES AND LOTS MORE SHOPS. [GRIN]

WWW.YOURMOVE.CO.UK HAVE A AGENT IN NOTTINGHAM TOWN CENTER.

BASICALLY WERE U WANT TO LIVE DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU WANT TO SPEND.

CAN I BE NOSEY N ASK WHAT YOUR DH DOES [WINK]

I lived in West Bridgford for 6 months and really liked it. There's a park, leisure centre, gym, small centre with shops (Boots, Iceland, bookshop, cafes etc), 20 min from the centre by bus/30 min on foot, good schools..but a bit expensive. And close to ASDA
