Any Russian speaking mamas?

just wondering if there are any Russian speaking mamas on this. I have recently moved to Kent and my Russian network has diminished considerably. Although not Russian myself I lived there for a reasonably long time and work as a Russian teacher and part time interpreter. I would like to keep my Russian going and am keen to teach my daughter.
Look forward to hearing...

Hello there

I am from Moscow but live in Kent now with my two kids. Where about are you?

Nome · 26/04/2004 19:01

I studied Russian and am a Russian teacher, though I can feel all but the most basic stuff dribbling out the back of my head. Not sure whether that's my Russian or all non-baby stuff!

sarochka · 26/04/2004 20:59

Privet!
I an actually based in Dover and you ?
Umm Nome this is what happens I reckon. I taught Russian in Birmingham for a couple of years to IB level and actually had a lot of take up and good results at GCSE however I moved to Kent to be closer to family since I had baby dd aged 2 and a bit. Where do you teach ?
Russian lady I lived in Moscow for a couple of years and then in Voronezh. In Moscow I was initially in Cokolniki and then Dinamo. Fantastic city. Speak soon

Hello, Russian-speaking mamas! We have a "child from Chernobyl" (actually from Mogilev) coming for 4 weeks in June - we never seem to get around to sending him letters - would any of you be up for translating (via snail mail?)

Russianlady · 26/04/2004 22:43

Hello Sarochka and Nome. I am Katya from Moscow (Sokol - next station to Dinamo) but now live in Maidstone with my English husband. I am happy to translate a letter to a child in Chernobil. I admire women who do that - get a Russian kid and give him a better life. Even a month in England would be very good for him! Nome, where do you live?

Interesting I found you two - I was just passing this site...

I have a some Russian friends here - all gilrs like me - 30-35 years old. The problem is - with two kids I have no time to see paople as much as I would like... I am looking at hiring some Estonian nanny now as an au-pair...I need some help! ALex - older boy is 3 - ADD, behaiver problems, constant tantrums... And Masha - baby girl - hyperactive toddler...

Katya

Lesley76 · 26/04/2004 22:49

JanH - I'm not a fluent Russian speaker, but I have organised visits of children from Belarus to the UK. I would be happy to help with any practical info you might need eg familiar foods .

Nome · 26/04/2004 23:25

I live in Cambridge, though I taught out in Suffolk. Have now given up and am a SAHM. I doubt I'll ever use Russian again professionally, I don't think I could even pass GCSE. I spent two years in Moscow (Park Kulturi at MGLU and Yugo Zapadnaya working). It all seems a very long time ago! A decade since I graduated and almost 20 years since my first ever lesson at school!

sarochka · 27/04/2004 20:43

We didn't do Russian at our school - I know what you mean though about not really using it. There is a really good Russian society in Cambridge as that is where we thought we might move to in the future. I could pass you the details - they also have Russian club for children at the weekend!
I also graduated almost a decade ago and this makes me feel really old although am but 33!!
Katya - I understand about the meeting people. I work full time as my husband has gone back to college. I have a good job although I wish that I could stay at home with baby Anya - very vocal and very bossy child. I am lucky as my mum does alot with her so she does not miss out. that's me who does that. Very difficult to meet people and make the time. Anya has a doll called Masha - 2nd favourite name. Does your husband speak Russian?
Am also happy to translate letters.
Sara

OOOh Sarochka, my dotchinka is called Anya and is also VERY bossy and vocal. Do you think its the name???

sarochka · 28/04/2004 21:33

Lesley - perhaps tis the name after all!! How old is yours ?

OP posts:
Janh · 28/04/2004 21:39

Lesley, thanks for your offer - actually we are OK on foods etc as our boy comes with a group (Friends of Chernobyl's Children) so we have lots of advice and support - which is a relief! Not that he eats very well but he still seemed to grow a large amount last summer - must be the lovely Lancashire sunshine.

Thanks also for translation offers - will get back to you.

sarochka · 29/04/2004 22:13

kooda vsye poshli? Hope all ok out there. Jahn - think it's great that you do this and would be interested myself when I have a bit more room. Do you know of anyone doing this in Kent ?
Katya - there is a mumsnet kent neetup on Friday the 14 of June in Ashford if you wanted to come, everyone welcome I think. I thought that it would certainly be something different!!!

Hi, sarochka! This is the group we are involved with and there is a Kent group - this is the contact page (it's Medway, don't know if that's anywhere near you? But it's a place to start!)

Russianlady · 29/04/2004 23:18

Hello Janh. This Saturday I was going alone to a meeting of Maidstone Link of Chernobyl Children Life Line. I just offered my help (I am Russian so I might be useful for some translations). If my husband babysits for me, I will go. I wonder whether it is the same organisation you involve with?

Sarochka - thanks for the invite. I will put the date in my diary and will try to make it. Did you mean Friday 14th of May not June??? But better probably If you are ever in Maidstone - we can have coffee together and talk Russian! While we are chating, my boy Sashka 3 years old and my dochka Mashen'ka - 17 months could play with Anechka! Or we could meet somewhere in the middle - we go to Herne Bay sometimes on Sundays - if the weather is good - we can go for fish and chips!

All the best

sarochka · 02/05/2004 11:44

Katya - meant the 14 of May - I think there are quite a few people going now. We could get to Maidstone quite easily, only takes about 30 mins on M20. So let me know a good time. I do work full time but am about at weekends. I've only been to Herne Bay twice. Is it nice over there? I love Whitstable and there are some great little cafes and pubs there!
It'd be good for Anya too. By the way her doll is called Masha. Did you go to the meeting BTW?
Thanks Jahn for that info - I shall be following it up as I think there is a closer link.

Sarochka - let me come back to you later on. Things are very busy over here so lets just postpone meeting for now, OK? Witstable is a lovely town I agree. Husband is going away on business for few weeks in May so maybe we will meet up one Sunday in June?

Katya

sarochka · 06/05/2004 21:12

That sounds great Katya. We are also manic at the moment. Have lots on at work - it never seems to stop. Speak to you soon.

lenaw · 06/05/2004 21:41

Janh - I will translate for you (if you still need it) I am Russian

Janh · 06/05/2004 21:49

Thank you, lena (and everybody)! Have to get a letter written first - have probably left it a bit late as the children arrive next month - his babushka wrote to us in September and we have been meaning to write back ever since but kept forgetting .

After he goes back in July I will be glad to take up translation offers!

Russianlady, yours is a different group - there is a surprising number of groups involved with Chernobyl children - but they all do a great job. Sarochka, hope you will be able to get involved - it would be wonderful for a Russian child to stay with you! (We don't manage to talk much to Ilya - smile a lot though.)

Russianlady · 10/05/2004 22:35

Lenaw - privet, I am Russian too. Where do you live? And before that? I live in Maidstone but all my life before lived in Moscow (Sokol station).

Katya

sarochka · 28/05/2004 19:06

Privet Katya
