Hi, I moved a few months ago from Ealing to the Ashby area. Any mumsnetters round here?

Hi I'm in Derby, not super close but thought I'd say hello and give you a bump before you drop off the 'active convos'

Hello, I'm on the Ashby side of Burton and moved up from London last year so can probably relate to some of the culture shock of leaving London...good and bad.
I'm currently on maternity leave with babies 2 & 3 (twin girls) and I already have a 2 1/5 year old boy. I'd be delighted to meet up with someone else who's made the move and is about during the day.

Pastarito · 14/09/2006 18:29

Thanks both! Ds1 had a friend over to tea so I had to leave the conversation. 3unders3 where are you exactly? I am in Measham (we looked in Ashby but didn't like the fact that all the houses we looked at were too close to the motorway. As you say, it is a bit of culture shock. I like it a lot and my kids (7 and 4) are so much better since we made the move, but it takes a bit of getting used to.

We are in Stapenhill just up from the gardens (where all the swans live). My son is in nursery Mondays and Fridays but Tuesday to Thursday we are nearly always available for a play. Having said that we are going on holiday for two weeks from next Friday so the next few weeks are a bit mad. Have to say I still miss London dreadfully and everytime we see anything filmed in London we get pangs - should get easier with time.

Ashby de la zouch is a wonderful name.

UrsulatheSeaWitch · 14/09/2006 19:49

My cousin does (not much help to you )

Very nice place, we love visiting. (And yes, a brilliant name, scummy!)

My best friend moved there from London where we live. Miss her a lot, but she really likes it. Don't think she comes on mn but I may be mistaken (maybe she's lurking round these parts and knows I'm me.....)

Pastarito · 14/09/2006 20:44

Ashby is kind of like the St Albans of the East Midlands but we ended up moving to a village nearby due to a weird combination of factors. My boys are both in school now (4 and 7, 4yr old just started) but I would still like to meet up with other mums in the area. I still work in London (and from home) so in some ways I still haven't made the transition!

I love the friendly atmosphere but am finding it hard to meet like-minded people. I suppose you can't have everything - my kids have been so much happier here.

Well i'm from Ealing!
And know someone who moved to Ashby....

Pastarito · 14/09/2006 21:51

Yes - used to live in Ealing. Could be me, or could be someone else who I could become friends with!!

If you think Ashby is the St Albans of the Midlands, I like to think Burton is the Enfield - not quite West Ken....

Pastarito · 14/09/2006 22:11

I've only been to Burton hospital so far (3 times, twice to A & E with accident prone child). What's it like?

My kids might end up going to senior school in Burton (if we stay in the area) as their current school feeds into a Burton school.

People are quite different here and very nice, just somehow not geling with it (?). I know that I need to just join a load of clubs and things but I work 30 hrs a week (mostly from home) and then have the kids to sort out not to mention my parents who live nearby (main reason for moving in the first place). Ho hum. Will probably end up joining the PTA.

3under3, what kind of a culture shock have you had then?

Actually Worcester is probably the St Albans of the Midlands come to think of it...

There is no Starbucks/Cafe Nero/Costa in Burton which was a big one for a buggy pushing bored person. People are friendly but a bit remote. It may be because everyone locally seems to have lived here for ever unlike us.
There are some OK shops in Burton but that's it there isn't a lot in the way of culture, just a multiplex cinema and a LOT of pubs (brewing capital of the UK apparently). Having lived with central London 20 mins away for 5 years that is going to take a lot of adjusting to. Although since we had baby 1 we weren't able to get out as much anyway. The Oasis' that we have found so far are the library (oh the glamour) which is very child friendly and has a nice cafe with decent coffee and the leisure centre (nice pools and really friendly).

As you say though it seems hard to gel, we have a couple of friends - people who have moved to the area and a couple of people we went to Uni with but that's it. As for schools we have had very mixed reports from a friend who is a secondary teacher locally so I dread that already!

Haven't really found much else of note as just after we moved here I fell pregnant and spent most of the next 6 months laid up with various pregnancy complaints then sat at home feeding babies. I am only just really starting to get out and about to be honest.

Hello - I am a frequent visitor to Ashby as I have relatives who lives there. My db had his wedding reception at The Fallen Knight (at the bottom of the hill just before town). Also have family in Sileby and Hugglescote. [Aren't there some lovely names in that neck of the woods?]

I'd come to a meet-up if there was one and tie it in with a visit to my rellies.

Pastarito · 14/09/2006 22:39

The more the merrier. Anyone else interested in a meet up in Ashby?
