London MN children's theatre outing

There was an idea going round a few weeks ago about organising a MN outing to see a kids theatre show. If anybody still likes the idea (thanks for reminder, Binkie!) how does this sound, at the Unicorn Children's theatre on the South Bank?

It's aimed at 6 year-olds and up; I know several of the people interested have boys in Y2, so that's the audience I had in mind. It's on from April to May, so reasonable time to plan ahead.

Any thoughts?

Sounds as if they'd be more than prepared for (might even be encouraging) the wilder excesses of eager audience participation - so sounds right up our street.

Sat 8th April is ds's birthday ...

Looks good. Would you be aiming for a Saturday performance? DH took the girls to see Tom's Midnight Garden there and was impressed with the theatre (performance less impressive). He went to an early one on a Saturday and said it was very quiet and there were lots of younger children there too (for those who might find babysitting problematic).

unicorn · 09/02/2006 10:16

If it's a Saturday I could take dd she is 6 (going on 16!)
Would we get a group booking discount (or even a Mumsnet discount?!)

frogs · 09/02/2006 10:26

Oh good, someone has found my thread at last! Yes, I was thinking a Saturday matinee, maybe outside holiday time.

It doesn't say anything about group discounts on the website, but once we have a clearer idea of numbers, we can always ask.

When do most schools break for Easter? I can't find DDs' term dates but am assuming they will be off on 8/4 and 15/4 - many people might be away so it may be more popular out of holiday time as you say Frogs.
I would be okay most Saturdays I think. Shall we bump this over the next week and see what the interest is like? If I remember correctly the seats aren't numbered which makes it easier if others wanted to come along having missed this thread.

Marina · 09/02/2006 17:33

I spotted this earlier and have now come and found it...count us in Frogs. Me and ds, six.

frogs · 10/02/2006 16:05

Okay, our Easter holidays are the weeks beginning the 10th and 17th of April. The play runs until 14th May, so would suggest that one of the Saturdays at the beginning of May -- maybe the Saturday after the bank holiday? Don't have actual dates in front of me atm.

Would be good to keep this bumped and see who else likes the idea. Dinosaur and Kayleigh also have Y2 boys, and I'm sure there are others.

I'm going to be away next week, so if we can gather as many names as poss and hopefully agree a suitable date, we could book it maybe in the next couple of weeks?

Dinosaur · 10/02/2006 16:12

Yes, I'd be interested!

serenity · 10/02/2006 16:16

Depending on dates I'll probably be up for bringing DSs (Yrs 1 and 3). The first Saturday in May is my birthday so it would depend on how generous I was feeling I've already spent one birthday watching Barney at London Zoo......

Marina · 10/02/2006 16:19

Will mail Scummy and Tigermoth, both also proud owners of Y2 boys...and keep bumping.
Happy Half Term all...

Bink · 10/02/2006 16:36

No takers for Sat 8th April then?

(Hm, realise it might have sounded below as if I didn't want to do it then. Typical vaguery on my part. On the contrary - I think it would be a lovely b'day treat, and no clash w/ party as we'll have done that [bowling, sigh] already.)

Bink · 10/02/2006 17:17

Oh - frogs, just spotted your suggestion of the Sat after May Bank Holiday (ie 6th) - we can't do that one, as we're out of town at a memorial thing.

Fauve · 14/02/2006 17:28

We're up for any theatre trips - dd, Year 3, and possibly ds, Year 7, too if it's not too young for him. Any Saturday in April or May looks good for us at the moment (hmm, must get out more...)

BTW, we went to see Horrible Histories on stage last weekend - Vile Victorians and Terrible Tudors - and they were brilliant. Dd was rolling in the aisles. They're going to do Awesome Egyptians and Rotten Romans next - can't wait - no dates set yet, but I can let you all know. They'll be at Wimbledon Theatre. The audience was predominantly boys of 8/9, I'd say.

tigermoth · 14/02/2006 22:09

I'm interested, too! will see what date you decide on.
Fauve, if your Year 7 son comes along, I'll bring my Year 7 son as well When we see shows aimed at slightly younger children, my 11 year old ds usually enjoys them too.

Bink · 13/03/2006 10:09

Thought it might be time for a wee bump on this ... still very keen, but May is looking difficult for us now & I wanted to see how people feel about April (before creeping off sadly to book alone).

How do people feel about going on a Sunday afternoon? - sometimes that's easier to do than trying to work around Saturday football/cricket/swimming/parties.

If OK, how about Sunday 9th April, at 2.30?

frogs · 13/03/2006 10:19

Oh Bink, you are a hero, I've kept meaning to get back to this but hadn't got round to it.

9th is not good for us, as children will probably be at in-laws out of London. How about 23rd April, or 30th April?

OP posts:
Fauve · 13/03/2006 10:29

23 or 30 April would be good for us Smile
