Anyone live in Holmfirth, Yorkshire?

HI we're thinking of moving either to Holmfirth or nearby can anyone tell me what the good/bad areas are so i can get a better idea of where to look. I've been looking online and the house prices seem really reasonable in places like Honley and New mill are these nice places? Im just a bit dubious because prices seem so cheap compared to Liverpool but then again Liverpool is very expensive.
TIA

I've been to holmfirth to visit but don't know the areas unfortunately. Holmfirth seemed really nice

SIL lives in a village just outside it but i don't know anything about the house prices. it's nice round there though they love it.

daisy1999 · 14/01/2006 14:56

edodgy · 14/01/2006 15:04

Hi, I've lived in Hudderfield all my life so can give you my opinion!!

There are some really nice places nearby - Honley is a nice area with decent schools and a busy little high street. Most of the villages around Holmfirth are lovely - Wooldale, Scholes etc. Not sure if you have older children but Holmfirth High school has an excellent reputation and results.

A good estate agent in the area is Simon Blyth - have a look at their website.

Feel free to CAT me if you want any more info!

edodgy · 14/01/2006 16:07

Cheers Sarah, Thats really helpful, I've looked at the Simon Blythe website and cant believe how good the prices are for some lovely houses, think we're moving in the right direction because Liverpool prices are astronomical! I have a dd who's 2.8 and a 6 week old ds.

Hi, lived in Huddersfield the last 11 years (but not a local) and have worked in holmfirth for a couple of years in that time- it's only about 15/ 20 mins in the car. The areas you mention on the whole are nice with good schools and Kirklees in general has some good facilities. Yes the propertyis cheaper than most major cities, you get more for your money - beautiful Yorkshire stone built houses and often a bit of land or decent garden ( we are in a large 6 bedroom Victorian end terrace with cellars and attics- close to the town centre- would probably go for about £250,000 now , we bought it 11years ago for about £90,000- wouldn't get anything like that in a big city area!!!!)Hope your house hunting goes well- we've been trying to arrange a west yorkshire meet up so if you fancy a coffe when you get here? Best of luck.

maturer · 14/01/2006 16:32

p.s I moved her with a 17mths old and an 8week old baby (got another since then!) so I know what it's like and we moved away from family and friends but found a lovely family area to live in.

edodgy · 14/01/2006 16:43

Thanks maturer yes i'd love to meet up when we move hopefully we should be there by summer.

Sorry to hijack edodgy - hello again maturer - shall we try and meet up for coffee soon? Maybe just in Huddersfield would be easier - Wed or Thurs good for me.

maturer · 14/01/2006 18:09

Hi sarah-the last attempt kibnd of got hijacked by illness!
Love to meet and yes - why not just make it in Huddersfield to start with and anyone can join us who wants.
Sorry I work wed, thurs, fri but could do evenings or Mon and Tues during the day. do you have little ones? happy to meet somewhere child friendly as long as i'm not alone (mine are all at school now so I'd look a bit of a "weirdo" turning up at - say jumping Jacks- without kids and no one to meet!)If you are child free then the worlds our oyster.
What date can you do?

maturer · 17/01/2006 08:14

Bump!
Anyone fancy a coffee today- Tuesday 17th?

sarahhal · 18/01/2006 09:05

Hi maturer. Things a bit hectic both this week and next (seem to have gone from having no life at all to loads on!)

It sounds ages off but how about Tuesday 31st? I am going to see if my parents would like DS1 for a couple of hours so we could meet somewhere normal (eg no giant plastic houses or crash mats!)

Could meet up anywhere in Hudderfield - there's a few decent coffee places now aren't there?

maturer · 18/01/2006 20:29

Hey sarah- let's pencil in Tueday 31st then- how about 11am cafe Nero(on the corner where yorkshire BS used to be)
If this isn't suitable feel free to change or suggest differently.
Anyone else want to join us?

sarahhal · 19/01/2006 17:44

That sounds fine - will contact you later just to confirm.

Anyone else free to meet up?

vic891 · 25/01/2006 14:04

edodgy - i'm from penistone, a couple of miles away from holmfirth, and it's a really nice place. my brother has recently bought a flat in holmfirth and is very happy there. my old school - penistone grammar - just across the 'state line' in south yorks was very good when i was there (yonks ago). good luck!

maturer · 29/01/2006 11:44

sarah- are you still ok for Tuesday 11am cafe Nero?
Anyone else want to come- very welcome?

sarahhal · 29/01/2006 16:22

Hi Maturer - just logged on to contact you!

I was OK to meet but we are now having a dishwasher delivered on Tuesday and they can only say between 10 and 3 so afraid I will be housebound most of the day. The chances of them arriving at 10.00 are very very slim!! (Eldon electricals - ever had them???)

Really sorry to let you down at such short notice - will have to rearrange soon.

sazzlealsop · 29/01/2006 16:51

Hi edodgy
I've lived in holmfirth all my life, oroginally lived in Scholes and that's a fanttastic village, the junior school's excellent and everyone's friendly. Am now living in honly which is nice too. I think the best place's to look are scholes, wooldale, netherthong and honly. New Mill is ok but a bit built up with three main road's meeting in the middle. Have a look on the earnshaw kaye website and william h brown estate agents (part of the sequence company). If you look on rightmove.co.uk most of the estate agents in the area are on there

maturer · 29/01/2006 18:03

No probs sarah- we'll try another day (life just has a habit of getting in the way some times!)
Not used that company before so no comment.
Enjoy your dishwasher!
