Anyone fancy joining me on a singing weekend 10-12 March

It's at Swarthmoor Hall , which is in South West Cumbria. Some details on the website.

10-12 March. Cost £130 residential, £90 non-residential. I live very close, but will want to stay residential as long as they have the space.

SING YOUR HEART OUT with Margaret Frayne (I have no clue who this woman is!)

Details: A course for anyone who can sing, or would like to sing even if you think you can't. We will work on vocal technique, sing as a group using rounds & songs selected by the group. The weekend will be flexible to accommodate the needs and wishes of the participants and will include discussion about singing and attitudes towards it. It will be an excellent time to experiment and have fun!

I definitely want to go, and am planning to book next week.

Does anyone fancy joining me?

I've emailed them to check availability, and have made a provisional booking for me.

None of my RL friends would be interested. It would be great to have the opportunity to get to know someone better from here!

God, I would love to, it sounds fabulous. I don't drive though - wonder how much a taxi from the station would be? Hope you find someone more likely to be able to make it (iyswim)

roisin · 19/11/2005 16:17

It's not far from the station. I may come by train myself. If dh is dropping me off we could pick you up at the station and give you a lift!

I'd love to come, but unfortunately, I don't think DP would be happy with me being away the whole weekend. Also, Cumbria is about a 10 hour drive from here

funnytype · 20/11/2005 10:38

Love to if I lived anywhere near but I dont I am in Sussex but have a great time. Steph xxx

Wow, How fantastic. I'd love to do this, my voice was trained when I was a teenager, but I've let it go very badly since then.

I'll have a word here. dh works away Mon- Fri, so this would be logistical prob to be solved, and we won't see each other for 2 weeks but I'd love to go.

roisin · 20/11/2005 15:54

Oh it would be great if you could come Easy! You deserve a weekend off

I've hardly done any singing at all for the past 3 years and am really looking forward to it.

Dh had a meeting planned for all day on the Saturday, but I think it was one he didn't particularly want to attend, as he was quite happy for me to go.

Roisin, thanks for this, I would be gagged within 5 minutes, my singing is about as tuneful as my snoring, but I have a friend who I think may be interested. I'll tell her about it.

roisin · 20/11/2005 18:57

ROFL!

I love the Creation Hausfrau

The more I think about this,m the more I'm tempted. Need to pluck up lots of courage to broach the subject with dh, though. I'm still 'on parole' for abandoning him with the kids for a long weekend in August

fullmoonfiend · 20/11/2005 19:49

By the way, you don't have to be a talented singer do you? I adore to sing, used to be in a choir, but for the past decade my singing is strictly bathroom, or bawling along to PopParty crud with the kids.

roisin · 20/11/2005 20:10

Fullmoonfiend - basically all I know about the course is what I've posted below. I'm sure if you contacted Swarthmoor Hall they could give you more info if you wanted.

Swarthmoor Hall is a Quaker pilgrimage site, and I think it is quite likely that some at least of the participants will be from that sort of background. I would kind of expect it to be more geared to folkmusic sort of singing, rather than opera or Lieder or something. But I just love singing anything, so am happy to go along and see what happens!

would love to get away, for a break, and sing too.

hmmm....

will work on this.

WalkinginaRainbowWonderland · 22/11/2005 18:42

I'm interested and thinking about it too...

Will broach the subject with dh later.

roisin · 22/11/2005 19:03

Oh, it would be great if you were both to join me! I got my application form today, so filled it in and sent it straight off!

Unicorn - I know what you mean exactly. I need to get away for a break, and I've been keeping an eye out for a suitable 'excuse' for a while! I think I will really enjoy this.

The form says:
A course for anyone who can sing, or would like to sing even if you think you can't.
We will work on vocal technique including breath control, tuning and voice projection.
We will sing as a group using rounds & songs selected by the group.
There will be the opportunity for people to sing solo, if they wish.
The weekend will be flexible to accommodate the needs and wishes of the participants and will include discussion about singing and attitudes towards it.
It will be an excellent time to experiment and have fun!

The event begins 4pm Friday onwards and ends about 2.30 pm Sunday.

Feel free to CAT me if you want to ask anything else!

roisin · 24/11/2005 18:43

Thanks for your CAT! I've emailed you.

Roisin

I am 99.9 per cent certain that I am going to do this .. so thanks for alerting me.
If pay up asap, then I can't not go can I?
Have now got the on line info (does Quaker = Teetotal?) not that I am desperate or anything

anyone else fancy a singing retreat?

roisin · 24/11/2005 22:22

Wahey! Fab news!

Cancellation details:
over 4 wks notice - deposit only (£30)
1-4 wks - 50%
under 1 wk 100%

Quaker does not mean teetotal, but there isn't a bar there, and it's quite a trek to a pub. So maybe bring a bottle of wine each?!

Easy · 29/11/2005 18:15

Yes, I worried about the Quaker aspect. I need a relaxing break, but to me that includes a glass of wine or 2. I wouldn't want to put my foot in it.

roisin · 29/11/2005 18:21

If there's 3 of us we can do what we like!

Seriously, Quakers are not TT. There will definitely be no problem about having some bottles of wine in the evening, or going down the pub if it's fine weather. They are very big on sustainability and recycling, so might get a bit cross if you threw a load of glass wine bottles in the bin; but definitely not about you drinking them!

There will prob. be an option to go to the Quaker Meeting on the Sunday morning, but it certainly won't be compulsory.

If you have any queries email the manager of Swarthmoor Hall. He's called Bill Shaw and is a lovely bloke. I'm sure a chat with him would put your mind at rest.
