Dh has got to do some training in Kiddlington from the 21st to 25th of this month and dd and I will be going with him.

Last time he stayed in Kiddlington but he's going to get somewhere more central so it's easier for me to get about as I don't drive.

So, does anyone want to do lunch or could you recommend some places to take dd (2)?

nbg i am not ignoring you and would love to go for lunch but sadly I am due on Sunday so fear it may not be practical...
I will think of some suitable places for dd (I have one same age). might she like the openb top bus? that is quite fun

Nbg · 09/11/2005 11:48

Oooh fingers crossed for you

Hope your baby appears on Sunday!

She probably would like the open top, weather permitting obviously! I take it you can just get them from the centre of Oxford?

Sunday - or before....
yes you can pick them up from the centre of Oxford. I will cat you with some more ideas later...

yoyo · 09/11/2005 11:58

Oxford city centre is not brilliant for children. There are places to run around (we favour the parks or the walk down by Christ Church) but obviously much will depend on the weather. Think there might be a soft play place down by Gloucester Green but have not been there myself. Haven't lived there for a while but still visit occasionally.

You can pick up buses that will take you to Burford where there is a small wildlife park. Or you could go to Marlborough - play area, butterfly house, train.

I would ring tourist info for advice so you can have a few things planned in advance. Have fun.

Nbg · 09/11/2005 12:01

Thanks both.

Will have a look on the net and see if I can find some bits to do. Don't really fancy spending 5 days stuck in a Hotel.

is your dd old enough for the University museum (dinosaur skeletons) or the Ashmolean? Climb Carfax towner, go to the cinema, take a rowing boat on the Cherwell if not too cold. Walk in the Botanical Gardens (dont miss the glass houses) and ChristChurch meadows. Visit the Cathedral (inside Christ Church, you have to pay if you cant give an Oxon address ). there is or was, also a tourist attraction called the Oxford Story, which may or may not be suitable for children. Check out the museum of modern art, down near Westgate, it sometimes has things that a child would find amusing. Visit the bookshops (the Red House in Summertown IIRC). Buy lunch at the Carfax Chippy and eat it sitting on the wall behind St Mary's church on the High Street.

harpsichord carrier - should have guessed from your nickname that you are an Oxford resident! Do you live in North Oxford?

Nbg · 09/11/2005 12:57

Thanks for all that NN

Will deffo check out the art museum. DD is only 2 and has quite a short attention span like most children her age so need to find something that will keep her busy.

I'll do a day shopping but don't want to have to do it everyday.

couple more thoughts - there is a swimming pool in Summertown. Also, check out what is going on at the Oxford libraries, they probably have story time one afternoon.
And Bicester Village is only a short bus ride away from Kidlington....

Nightynight · 09/11/2005 13:04

look out for big, coloured A3 sheets of paper pinned up everywhere called something like "What's On in Oxford" If still going, they will advertise everything that's happening in the City.

Nbg · 09/11/2005 13:08

Excellent, thank you.

Would love to meet up, I am a friend of isobelsmum and have recently moved to oxford, before i moved here she started a thread to see if there were any mumsnetters here as she was worried about me being lonely, although its a friendly place! She didn't get much response so good to see there are mumsnetters here!

Library groups at central library start at 10.30 wednesday morning until 11. Next week is rhyme time, the week after is story time.

There are loads of family centres, rose hill open monday to friday 9. i think til 4, they have lunch and a playroom, florence park family centre mon, thursday and friday, also do lunch, donnington doorstep 10 til 4 mon - fri

Rainbow house wednesday, thursday and friday is in new inn hall street

St ebbes toddler group is good, wed 10 - 12 st ebbes church

St aldates church has toddle in mon 10-11.30 entrance in pembroke st i think

CKMUM · 10/11/2005 14:06

And don't miss hinksey park, easily get a bus to abingdon road or can walk from city centre. There are two big ponds, ducks, swings, slides etc, even a an outdoor pool but obviously closdnow as too cold at this time fo year, we can meet up and i can show you places.

Tip for the buses, get stagecoach if possible, not oxford bus company buses, as they only have 1 pushchair and you get thrown off if a wheelchair user wants to get on. You are allowed 3 buggies on stagecoach, you can get 24 hou passes which make travelling cheaper if you want more than one return journey a day, these are available with either bus compnay

Nbg · 13/11/2005 17:20

Thats great CKMUM.

Still don't have any details yet of where we are staying.

Anyone have a preferred day?

I'd rather give Monday a miss because we'll probably be travelling down in the morning.
