I'm writing an article for the Guardian's daily features section all about grandparenting.
It was inspired by an interesting article I came across recently saying that America is in an age of peak grandparenting - particularly grandmothering.
The idea being that where some grandparents have a reputation for playing golf, sipping cocktails and "laughing while their millennial children are suffering", in reality they are doing a lot of childcare.
I would hazard that it is a similar situation in the UK and so am writing a story looking at the situation here and delving into the modern role of grandparents in the UK, looking at whether it's shifting and if so why that might be. As well as thinking about what impact all of this is having on bringing up kids, as well as what older age looks like for those with grandparental responsibilities.
I am looking to speak to a few families to find out more about the different experiences of the child/grandparent dynamic – some where the grandparents are heavily involved, some where they choose not to be. If you're interested, please contact [email protected].
