Any insights into building surveying as a career?

I’m a qualified architect looking for a change of direction, most people I know who have left the architect role have moved into project management / client side however that doesn’t really appeal to me.

I enjoyed the technical aspects of the role and have been wondering about building surveying as a potential option. I’ll be honest that I know very little about the role beyond seeing inspection reports commissioned by surveyors.

Are there any building surveyors here who could give a bit of insight into the role, do you have any ex architect colleagues?

I was with a dual qualified friend this evening as it happens. He specialises in insurance claims surveying of listed buildings, though he does other types as well. DH employees quite a lot of surveyors, his all work on construction defects, so looking for what has gone wrong and why its gone wrong

My sibling retrained in their 40s and become involved in property as a 3rd party wall surveyor and did home buyers reports. Works independently but linked into all the local Estate Agents. My other relative was a quantity surveyor so worked out the cost of all the things needed for building projects and. I’ve also worked with surveyors who do land and rural work so access agreements, valuations, leases, licences. So it’s a wide range of specialties depending on your degree you maybe able to do a 2year masters level to specialise then most do some kind of APC to join RICS and become chartered. Some government linked jobs will take on newly qualified then support them to become chartered then they all leave for private practice fo make more money. Good luck exploring what you’d enjoy.
