Pre Registration MSc - anyone applied/been accepted?

I've spent 20 years working in office based administrative roles. The last ten years (and my only UK based experience) has been in the same sector (HE).

I've got a first class UG degree (Humanities) that I did as a mature age student a couple of years ago, so I know I can study. I am now looking at some pre-registration allied health MSc programmes. I have always been interested in all things health and fitness, and I am good with people - and I have the time and the money to commit to an intense FT course.

But I have no experience of any kind working with people in a health care setting. Some of these programmes seem quite pragmatic in their entry requirements, saying things like 'we know it can be hard to get shadowing experience so any relevant experience that shows transferable skills.'

Has anyone managed to be accepted onto a pre-reg allied health course as a career changer without strong links to the profession/voluntary/personal carer experience? I assume if I'd been an administrator in a medical setting for 20 years that would be the type of thing they'd consider - but I haven't been!

I feel like I have such a long time working ahead of me, and am feeling quite stuck and pigeon holed, so considering all sorts of things at the moment.....help!

Do you know which AHP you want to do?

Some hospitals run work experience and shadowing days. And if it is one that has a lot of private workers you might get a shadowing day

I think you need to show an understanding of a lot of various areas of the job, for example id looking at physio show in your application that you know about more than just msk type avenue s, but cardio rehab, respiratory, womens health

Same for the other professions

I have a humanities degree and have just been accepted onto a Masters in speech therapy. I did volunteer at my local hospital as a dining companion beforehand and do a few free online courses which helped.

I think they are courses that attract a lot of mature students and career changers so don't worry too much about it being a big change. If you are interested in physio ( you mentioned fitness) this could be a few days shadowing physios or even personal trainers. Good luck!
