Ex primary school teacher - CELTA course

I'm a fully qualified primary teacher but haven't had my own class for several years now. I'm not interested in working in a primary school as a class teacher but I do love teaching.

I mainly tutor 11 plus and do odd bits of supply and am lucky to live in a grammar area where my 11 plus business has become really successful, to the point its replaced my teaching salary.

However, it's mainly evening and weekend work. I'm considering doing my CELTA with a view to teach English online, or locally during the daytimes.

I'm happy to teach adults or children and also feel like I need to do something new to use my brain and also to ensure I don't have to ever go back into primary school teaching! Online teaching appeals most but I'd consider teaching in a local library or college for adults maybe.

Has anyone else done CELTA? Would I cope academically and would my previous experience as a QTS teacher help me?

Hi, as a qualified teacher you’d find celta extremely easy and would pass with an A I’m sure, which few do. You could work in a language school or a FE college easily.

A book called teaching tenses will help you

Thanks for the confidence lol!

I did my first degree 20 odd years ago and am not really very academic - which is why I went for a vocational type qualification. I do worry about studying again but also feel like I'd like to extend my teaching repertoire and have options other than teaching young children.

I saw a job recently which was a role as an assessor for the IELTS exams/certification. I've always enjoyed teaching exam/test prep so this really appealed. I'd need a CELTA, and possibly even a DELTA plus relevant teaching experience so couldnt apply, but it did at least open my eyes to possible future opportunities.

Similar background OP, but I haven't used my CELTA at all. Online teaching is a race to the bottom, there are teachers charging as low as £5 per hour. Bear in mind that you need to do prep before a lesson, so most don't even get NMW even if you are charging £25 per hour. I don't agree that being a teacher gives you an advantage, the methodology and principles are completely different from primary school teaching.
I see it as a good thing to have if I ever end up abroad, but other than that I can't see me using it. The only ESL niche I would consider would be teaching for specific purposes, such as putting together a English for Business/Medical Use Programme. That way you could make it once and use it for everyone, with no prep each time.

CELTA qualifications are two a penny and won't open doors to much work. I live in a non English speaking country and so many trailing spouses do a CELTA, but it's really difficult to find more than odd hours of self employed work unless you have a masters in teaching English as a foreign language and multiple years of experience, plus a business degree - then you can be the only person actually directly employed by a language school - the administrator or director.

Hi, I feel like some of the above posts are being a bit negative. With your QTS you already have a good bedrock qualification (if you would consider working overseas, then QTS/PGCE is a passport - eg middle east - you can earn a tax free salary, benefits, loads of British schools). A CELTA only enhances that. Work at UK language schools may be a bit tight right now, but there is money to be made teaching online; I was offered work recently teaching English online with a Chinese company to school age children in China - 4 hours per day, £17 per hour (look on Indeed jobs). It's bonafide as a friend does it.
