OU vs brick uni

Just looking for experience and views on doing an OU course vs going full time on a degree at a local university. I am lucky to live near (and actually currently work at) a university where I am confident I would be able to meet the entry requirements. There is also a very good University within commutable distance that I would consider applying to (less confident on meeting their entry requirements).

I know the career route I now want to go down but not sure how best to approach it as I would need to keep working in some capacity, and I have a decent job that pays well at a uni that is very good to its staff in terms of flexibility and understanding of my daughters additional care needs which means I need a bit of flex with work every now and then when she is unwell and has to be admitted to hospital (2 -3 times a year). Part time may be an option for me but may mean a change of role and I'd have to commit to certain days, the benefit of studying at the uni I work for is I'd possibly be able to find out sooner what the contact days are likely to be and ask to work around those days, but I know this won't stay the same every year/semester.

Open University is cheaper, would be way easier to work around my work and caring responsibilities but I worry I won't get the networking and career opportunities as opposed to going to a campus. I also think I would struggle without the structure of a traditional uni timetable but then I'd be in a much better position financially if I did OU.

I am very fortunate to have the job that I do but I cannot be in uni admin for the rest of my life, I need to do something more with myself but feeling very stuck.

Is a degree apprenticeship a possibility?

Lleys · 13/05/2025 17:26

I’m doing a PGCE with QTS paid by my school (£9k via the apprenticeship levy) and am given 1 x day per week to go to uni and still paid my full time wage

What do you want to retrain to do?

RockGirl · 20/05/2025 08:28

Are you sure the Open University is cheaper? Many universities give staff discount, have you looked into this? My last institution gave 50% off to staff.

I did OU, you do have to be disciplined to get on and do it.
eg - I am going to do this assignment this weekend and unless the house is burning do not speak to me.
For my course we set up a Facebook and WhatsApp group which was really useful when people said I'm trying to quote abc but can't find it and someone would come back with the book and page.
On my course there were a few meet ups and as we entered Covid there were Teams meetings.
It is HARD work, especially if you have a job and a family.
But keeping the income is really good.

It depends on what you want to do. I love the OU but I'm doing my degree for interest rather than any career goals

In terms of structure, you will have tutorials at set times but many of them are recorded so you can watch at your leisure and usually there's a few options to go for. Assignments are due in at set times - extensions can be granted if necessary (other than for the end of module assessment or examination if your module has one - many don't) and you are given a timetable of what you should be studying when.

They also have a fairly good careers service, and networking is a possibility depending on what you want to do.

Yes I already asked my university and was told no staff discounts unfortunately!
