What job is it I'm looking for? And how to get there?

I sort of know what I would like to do just not sure what these roles would be called and if they exist, also what courses training I might need to apply. Here are the types of jobs I would like.

So I would like to be a source of support to troubled teens, either in school or out. Working with them and their families to help resolve situations or problems.

Working with pregnant women or post natal, as a support for their mental health or just a general source of support.

My background. 26 years as an NHS nurse, left nursing (after a serious illness) 8 years ago. Worked as a nursery nurse and a teaching assistant since then, also an invigilator for GCSEs and A levels. I'm 56 years old.

Basically I like nurturing people. Don't want a job as a carer though.

School counselor? Youth worker?

JC03745 · 25/10/2024 18:25

Mental health support worker? Are you still registered with the NMC? Mental health nurse on a teen ward, eating disorders, youth detention?

Social worker specialising in young people and families? Health visitor? Those professions would welcome you with open arms!

Hi- it’s great that you want to help others. Perhaps being a doula might be what you’re looking for?

HappytoH3lp · 25/10/2024 18:27

An Early Help Family Intervention worker for a local authority or a children’s social worker for a local authority would be the role that covers both those things. If you have qualifications or even perhaps just the experience from working in the nursery or school that would help you get an Family Intervention Job. Social workers need a degree but there are multiple ways you can get the degree now, including a training contract with a local authority. Just look at the vacancies on the local authority websites near to where you are and it will give you an indication of the difference roles and person specification

Parent Infant Practitioner or nursery nurse in a community Perinatal mental health team.

A lot of places do social work masters or apprenticeships if that is on your radar. You can be paid to train.
Family support worker or assistant practitioner within the social work teams (either child protection or looked after children) would give you some sense of the type of work.
I know of someone who works for a charity who works with mums who have had a child removed previously trying to break the cycle.
Pastoral support worker in school.
Mental health in schools practitioner (Google mhsp) has been rolled out in some areas. I think they pay band 5 ISH.
From the pregnant/postnatal side, if your local area has a mother and baby unit you could probably look for work as some sort of health care assistant or family support worker there. They also employ nurses and social workers obviously.
Depends what you want/need your earnings to be I guess.

School nurse? Retrain as health visitor?

Startingagainandagain · 25/10/2024 18:40

You could also work for a helpline that gives advice and support to vulnerable people or people with a specific health condition. Lots of charities run this type of support.

Phineyj · 25/10/2024 18:43

I think if you set up alerts for "safeguarding" + "name of local academy trusts with secondary schools" you might find something suitable. We've just hired an ex-social worker as safeguarding lead.

Oh that would be perfect for me I think! I need to find out if there are any of these jobs going.

MissyB1 · 25/10/2024 21:26

Yes family mediation is something I would really value, it’s close to my heart.
