History teacher

Is anyone here a history teacher?

I'd love to retrain to become one. I've a few questions.

My highest qualification is a level 3 in childcare, what would I need to do before doing a uni course?

Would I have to physically go to uni? Or could I train alongside my job, through open university for example?

I have a keen interest in history and science and think I'd be well suited to a teaching job. How stressful is it being a secondary school teacher?

Anything else I should know?

Thank you so much.

Hi,

The first thing you would need to look at is getting your bachelors degree in history and how to meet the requirements to get onto the course. You wouldn’t have to go physically to uni to do this. The open university offers a degree in history and is open to accepting people without formal qualifications like A-levels although they recommend a few courses to prepare you.

Once you have your history degree, you apply to teacher training via the traditional route so a PGCE or an on the job training route like Teach First or SCITT.

As for how stressful you will find it, it depends on what kind of person you are and your school etc and many other things! There will be ups and downs but I think it’s a great career to aim for.

Best of luck!
