Retraining due to medical issues

I’m currently looking at retraining due to medical issues. Last year I had a cardiac arrest which led to a hypoxic brain injury meaning I now struggle with my speech and writing.

I’m looking for a role that doesn’t require much speaking or writing. I can type but not as fast as I used to. My current employer is putting pressure on me to speak as part of my role.

I’m currently the top of a band 6 (NHS) so around £45k with the recently announced pay uplift. I can afford a pay cut but would obviously prefer not to!

My skills are medical terminology, data entry and reading and analysing source documents.

Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

No suggestions for retraining but a couple of things you should look at, if only to rule them out:

  1. Is your employer making reasonable adjustments for your disabilities. Can you negotiate a change in duties with them?
  1. If you can't fulfill the duties of your current position and reasonable adjustments won't be sufficient to fix this, you may be entitled to ill-health early retirement. Read up on the rules of your scheme.

Get advice on these two things from union or elsewhere before resigning.

I'm only 38 so I think I've got a fair few years of working left in me.

My employer hasn't been the most supportive of my condition so I'm looking at alternatives.
