Anyone else just done their last exam, EMA, assignment, dissertation or whatever, for a degree in later life?

Last night I submitted my last paper for my Open University degree after six years of cramming my studies around work and family life, with zero interest from anyone at home, so I'd like to say a massive 'well done' to anyone else who's done the same and fancies some mutual back-slapping.

I headed more environmental science / science in society route.

If they have past papers I would do those. If not have a look on an exam board like AQA and look at the Higher GCSE and A level papers, the mark schemes and also the examiners report it wouldnt be exactly what you are doing but it does help you to see what type of things examiners are looking for

Thanks. I just did cellular biology (level 2) and it surpassed A level quite quickly. It’s a million miles from GCSE (my son is doing gcses). Was that your experience?

Singleandproud · 14/06/2024 23:10

I didn't really mean for the content, more for the exam practice if you don't have any other more appropriate past papers available to you
I found S111 to be GCSE level, S112 roughly A level then onto degree level for level 2 onwards

Elizo · 14/06/2024 23:22

Thanks that makes sense!

I’ve recently finished a Masters in Education (Special Educational Needs). It all got a bit messy last year following some issues after the strikes, and I was forced to defer, but I submitted my final piece last term and have my graduation next month.

Shivvy1 · 15/06/2024 01:06

I have just started the final phase of my OU nursing degree, I should be qualifying this year but I had to defer for a year due to physical health. I then lost my mum and grandmother the following year and it really has been such a long hard process and many times I have just wanted to jack it in. I have lost the motivation for it and I really struggle but I have got this far and I'm going to see it through to the end! At times
I don't even know if I still want to be a nurse!
I have a young child and home as well, it's hard fitting everything in!! Also just found out I'm pregnant so I hope I am able
To move around placements and still qualify next year but it's too soon for me to mention to my tutors about the pregnancy.
Well done to everyone for getting their qualifications, it really is a fantastic achievement xx

My daughter who had a toddler got her MA in social care . She is now a SW for child protection. Am so proud of her. Well done you! X

You can do this. Well done for being so determined.👏

I submitted my two EMAs this week and that's my degree in childhood and youth studies complete.

The relief is unbelievable and I can actually come home from work and relax (or do the housework) then sit studying and writing. I'm going to forget all about it until July when I'll be expecting my results 🙌🏼

Well done everyone!

This is the one I have just finished!

well done :)

McConkeysPlate · 15/06/2024 08:22

What a great post! Well done to everyone!
I have just finished a foundation degree in biological laboratory sciences with the 3rd top up up year in September. It’s been soooo tough at times but have had so much support. I have a graduation in September then another one next year too. Not sure if I feel like I should go to the first one?

Singleandproud · 15/06/2024 08:27

@McConkeysPlate Go, it was a nice day and plenty of others will be there for a foundation degree. However it's worth knowing the cost certainly added up if you want to wear a gown 99% do, photos, family tickets for the event, travel and accomodation the night before if you don't live close etc.
However we tagged it onto a half term break to the nearby city to make it more worthwhile

Just wanted to come back to this to say I got my results for my final module (advanced creative writing). And I got a distinction. My only one on this course. I'm over the moon. Grin

I'm just waiting to hear what my degree offer will be but I've used their guidance and I think^^ it'll be a 2:1 so fingers crossed there. After a really bad level 2 course where I got a grade 4 pass I didn't think a 2:1 would be possible. Smile

Oh yes - come on! Just got a grade 2 for my first level 2 module. Very haopy!

Total italics fail in my post thanks to the app. 🤣

Well done @Elizo - it's a wonderful feeling!

I'm still toying with the idea of a Masters but I don't know. I might get more into the editing work for a bit before I decide I think.

FlutterShite · 22/07/2024 21:12

Fantastic news, Tarkan and Elizo! My final module result came through today and it's given me the overall degree result I've been hoping for. I'm so happy.

Well done @FlutterShite I'm so glad you got the result you wanted!

Mama05070704 · 22/07/2024 21:32

Well done everyone, it’s no easy feat!

I went back to uni at 38, with 2 young children in tow. I’ve just graduated with a first class midwifery degree.

Tarkan · 23/07/2024 12:22

Well done @Mama05070704 - that's amazing!

I got my degree offer through today. I got the 2:1 I was hoping for. At one point I was so down about one of my courses I honestly didn't think I'd have a chance of anything other than a Third and I went into this year hoping I could manage a 2:2.

Hopefully I can get to celebrate soon. DH has just started a new job so it'll be a double celebration for us. Smile

I'm looking at doing the environmental science with management degree with the OU - how did you find it?

RhinestoneCowgirl · 24/07/2024 13:13

I graduated yesterday with a First, BA (Hons) in Early Childhood, it was a really emotional day. Felt amazing to be there with my partner and our teenage children, particularly because there was a point in year 2 where I seriously worried that I wouldn't be able to continue.

Well done to all of us! Being a mature student with the wealth of other stuff going on in our lives, it's even more of an achievement to finish an academic course.
