Hi all

Would appreciate some advice.

I currently work in a field that has more to do with housing law and housing management theory but I’d like to become a building surveyor.

I’m already qualified to level 7 but unrelated so been advised to do MSc in building surveying that is RICS accredited to retrain.

The issue is that I can’t quit my job so anything full time is a no go. I’ve found a distance learning MSc that can be studied part-time.

Has anyone become a surveyor later in life and would a distance learning route be appropriate? I’m aware I’d be starting at an entry level career-wise.

thank you in advance!

I'm not one but I work with building surveyors and I don't understand how anyone can be qualified to do it based on book learning alone. Are you sure the degree doesn't include an industry placement? Or is the plan to get the master's then start as a trainee surveyor?

Yes, a trainee surveyor.

Wouldn’t dream of anything else!

I think the degree teaches all the theory and then there is practice…

In your shoes I'd skip the time and expense of the master's and look for a company who'll sponsor your studies while you work as a trainee. Professional companies will give you paid day release and study time. I don't think coming in with an MSc but no experience would get you a better salary than coming in with no MSc and no experience.

Good luck!

Look into apprenticeships for building surveying. You might be able to fund a masters using that route. They are very popular these days for good reason. Uni fees paid, day release to study at a local uni and on the job training at the same time. Hard work though.
