Leaving nursing degree. What next?

Because of circumstances totally out of my control, I am having to quit my mental health nursing MSc. I have no idea what to do next instead.

I was enjoying the course and getting good marks but the person I was relying on for childcare has health issues, which mean they can’t look after DC while I’m on placement anymore. So I can’t do long shifts anymore.

Does anyone have any suggestions to what I can do next, similar to MH nursing without having to work 12/13 hour shifts?

Thanks in advance. Been feeling quite gutted about having to quit.

Hmm …

You surely can’t be serious, @lemonorange11? You’d give up an entire masters degree because one person has let you down?

What conversations have you had with your teaching institution? Presumably money is the thing preventing you from paying for childcare, but there must be options.

How old are your children?

How much longer do you have to the end of your degree?

If you really have exhausted every single possible childcare option then surely your institution would allow you a period of time away, with a firm date to resume later on.

Social work? More like 9-5 hours but not always.

Train as a psychological wellbeing practitioner - you get paid to study whilst you work.

How far along into your course were you?

What were you going to do after you qualified? As far as I am aware all shifts are 12.5 hours 🤨

OT?

Plenty of jobs in MH nursing that aren't 12 hour shifts.

How long do you have left of your course/ how many practice hours do you still need?
Have you spoken to the Uni yet to see if they can accommodate your change in circumstances?

EasterMummie · 11/03/2024 00:06

As others have said, how long until the end of your course, how old are your children, and have you discussed this with your tutor/university to see if anything can be accomodated?

Surely you don't need to quit a whole course due to 1 person not being able to cover?

Or one other option could be to pause the course for a year & use the time to work ans save up to pay for childcare costs to finish off the course.
