Hi
I'm a work from home mum/ full time homemaker whatever you want to call it. I feel like my brain is slowly dying.
15 yrs ago I was a manager of a busy ward then I had kids and gave up that career.
I'm lucky I don't need to work but I do need to do something.

Was considering a Social media management course as I have a couple buddies with SME's who I could work for.

Can anyone recommend. Decent course?

Google digital garage is a good starting point if you have no previous experience. You should also upskill yourself on graphics creation etc

Authorinwaiting · 19/12/2023 22:48

@Bunnyannesummers do you know where the graphic creation courses are?

If you’ve got no experience at all, just start with the Canva ones.

LondonGrimmer · 02/07/2024 16:50

Hey @Authorinwaiting how did you get on? I'm in a similar situation now and considering courses...

I worked tangentially in social media management for many years, both doing it myself and hiring others, and I definitely would NOT recommend it as a good area to re-train in and enter now. You have too much competition from remote workers outside the UK (i.e. cheaper), AI has decimated the industry, and even for the few employers still hiring human beings in the UK, you are up against enormous competition.

Look at the skills you have NOW, from what you worked in or studied before you had children, and build on that.

I'd sooner get language teacher training and set up doing 1:1 English language teaching on Preply or something than try to enter social media management today. Have a killer intro video, look super professional and price yourself realistically and you will build up a student portfolio pretty quickly (if you're a good teacher!).

Definitely not. It's not a valued skill (everyone thinks they can do it) so the pay is very low.

Agreed! I am a senior marketing manager for a charity so look after the company's website, social media, marketing collaterals and so on.

A constant issue with this organisation is some people with no knowledge whatsoever of the above working in totally unrelated roles thinking it is fine to claim our website is 'shit' or that we should do this and that on social media and trying to produce their own hideous and non-brand compliant leaflets and posters.

I am sick of it and looking to move to a different sector because of the lack of respect and decent pay for the comms function.

I've been a social media manager for ten years, its one of those jobs that everyone thinks they can do, it's not great pay but I can work from home and it appeals to my creative side, however I always feel I'm on the back foot keeping up with trends and new methods of working, and it's very competitive now, successful strategies will suddenly drop off a cliff, digital marketing companies are using generic AI and homogenous content, I plod along but it's not that much fun

caffelattetogo · 04/07/2024 12:25

I'd do a bookkeeping course instead. No one sticks their oar in because they think it's dull, and the pay is better.

LeopardLover82 · 05/07/2024 07:53

Don’t do it - I do marketing freelance - have done for 20 years - and social media is part of that and it sucks the life out of me. Like people have said above, everyone thinks they can do it. Everyone has an opinion and thinks they can go viral.

i’m looking to move out of marketing and no longer offer social media to new clients as I hate it - hence being on this board!

LondonGrimmer · 05/07/2024 19:00

Thanks everyone, think I'll stick to doing it as a volunteer/hobby!!

How long does it take to qualify? What's the pay like?

Oh my god this is me! So so miserable. The disrespect is even worse than the poor pay, so disheartening. Let me know if you have any ideas for a career change.

@LondonGrimmer hey! Sorry for the late reply.

I decided against this course of action. I spoke to the marketing girls in my husbands company and they echoed what the peeps said above.

A thankless task which invites constant criticism and
Uneducated ideas.

I went left field and decided to do a MA in Anthropology. It's part time over 2 yrs so by time it's finished my kids will be GCSE age and I'll need to concentrate on that.
