Does your sector need lots of new workers? If so, what skills do I need to get to work in it?

I want to retrain, but no idea what as. I think I can do a postgraduate course, but it would need to lead to a job fairly quickly.

Generally, I find I can get interested in most subjects. I'm a civil servant, so really good at picking up information fast, pulling people together around a topic and working to identify the change required. All very transferable, but I reckon I need some actual skills as well.

What occupations/ sectors are crying out for workers and will for the next 10 years or so?

I know electrical engineering is desperately needed for wind farms, grid upgrades, vehicle charging etc, but I'd need a whole new set of A levels for that. Is there something I can learn in a year that isn't teaching/ care/ social work?

I feel such a cliche! Many of my friends are similarly rudderless - how do we find out what skilled jobs are needed and skill up for them?

Ecology and Biodiversity: new government legislation means new planning requirements, jobs market absolutely booming right now, depends if you have a transferable first degree to maybe do an MA in Ecology/Biodiversity/ related area. Also depends if you're interested and passionate about that subject area!?

Cyber Security. Google GCHQ, they were offering free/low cost training.

Agree with PP - Cyber Security

Civil service/think tank /lobby group policy!

We can have all the net zero / biodiversity/ EV science experts in the world, they can't do anything without Government policy that supports it!

Tax advisory. You should be able to get a job as a trainee. You'd need to do a lot of learning, and sit and pass exams, and be numerate and accurate, but it can be very interesting if you train with a good firm. Once you have a bit of experience your skills will be in high demand.

Well, the thing is I'm in net zero policy right now and depressed by the constant shifting sands. It just takes one change in leadership/ senior manager and the whole painstaking house of cards comes tumbling down. I used to think progress went one way, now it feels like an endless battle.

Ecology and biodiversity sounds good though @Cantfaceoldage. Do I need to look for a specific qualification or professional group to understand options better? I'm in Scotland, but the general idea will be similar. I'll go and google some job ads in that kind os area, see what they ask for.

I had wondered about cyber security. Again, is there a way of knowing what courses are useful and reputable?

Thank all, keep the ideas coming!

Ah, sorry, you mentioned GCHQ - that should be credible and reputable or we're all in trouble!
