I am coming to the end of a part time MA - writing up my dissertation now. I have done well throughout the course but for some reason, I am now really lacking motivation to finish my dissertation write up.

I have done the research and have done quite a bit of the write up now so just need to finish but keep getting writers block and procrastinating 🤯 neither of which I have time for! I also keep convincing myself I will just fail - also not helping!

Today I really need to make some decent headway so I am going to use this thread to update my progress later and make myself accountable (even if I do just write to myself lol 😂).

However, if you're studying and want to join in, feel free. Alternatively, words of wisdom/encouragement/a kick up the backside are all welcome!

I have subheadings/plan so I am aiming to start on a subsection and set a timer for ten minutes and just write as I think it's the only way I will actually be able to do anything!

Me! Same position as you and my supervisor hasn’t been the best so I’m a bit on my own. Just want to get it done now. I’m about a quarter of the way through the writing up.

We can do this!

Fallulah · 23/08/2023 09:53

What helped me was putting the whole document together with all the required pages, suggested word counts and contents page, so that that’s not a mad rush next month.

I’ve written the intro and part of the lit review. Today I’m going to finish my methodology chapter.

And I’m doing the referencing as I go along because I’ve learned from previous assignments!

PumpkinPie2016 · 23/08/2023 09:57

@Fallulah solidarity! I am also working on methodology today! Finding it a bit hard going as it's a social sciences MA but my background is physical natural sciences so very different.

Absolutely agree with you on the references- I am doing mine as I go as well.

Good luck today - we can definitely do it!

I’m the Queen of procrastination! I’m doing a 27 month pgdip level 7 and only 11 months in. I’m mostly enjoying it but it’s now feeling a bit of a slog. I’ve spent the morning mapping KSBs on my last 2 assignments and added them to my portfolio. I’m behind on my work products but hoping I’ll be caught up by end of September. Urgh, can’t wait to have it done.

I have the option to write a dissertation within 3 years of it ending and that makes it a masters. Currently it’s a hard no, but maybe I’ll change my mind. Far too daunting for the moment.

PumpkinPie2016 · 23/08/2023 13:36

@TeenLifeMum I have enjoyed my course overall but completely understand the feeling of it being a slog.

Not sure about you two but I have done mine p/t alongside a very full on, full time job plus house to run and a young child. So, it's been challenging at times. I am proud of myself for getting this far but just want it done now.

Just having a tea break but actually doing OK today. The ten minute timer and just type got me off to a good start. Need to do the same for the next section I think so I don't stall.

Hope you are getting on OK @Fallulah

Yep, I work full time in an nhs hospital Trust and have 3 dds 11-15 but I do get one day a week study time. However, the emails really back up while I’m out of the office. My job has also changed in the last couple of months (for the better) and there’s so much that is needed to be sorted to get things running smoothly.

Fallulah · 23/08/2023 14:08

I’m a teacher so these summer holidays are the only time I’ve had for writing up really. I massively resent having to do it but keep reminding myself I chose to! My school has paid so I can’t mess it up! I’ve got distinctions for everything else so far so I literally need to produce something passable for this and it will be ok.

The most annoying thing is people (for people read my mother and partner) asking how much I’ve done every day. I’d love to give the honest answer that I’ve actually spent all day watching crap on YouTube!

Haven’t started anything today yet… but I’m about to!

McConkeysPlate · 23/08/2023 14:59

I have a statistics workbook to do. Its right in front of me but can’t seem to start it.

PumpkinPie2016 · 23/08/2023 18:26

@TeenLifeMum gosh, I only have 1 child and that's hard enough - doing it with 3 must be really hard going so you're doing amazing!

@Fallulah also a teacher in middle leadership so using summer to write up. Just had the agenda through for inset days and it's rammed so also need to do some prep next week for start of term.

At this point, I'd be happy to just scrape a pass with it. I'm literally losing the will to live but have made decent progress today so that's good.

@McConkeysPlate set a timer for 10 mins and do whatever you can in that time - doesn't have to be right or perfect but it will get you started.

I have procrastinated ALL day! I think tomorrow’s results are playing on my mind.
The most productive thing I’ve done is make a list of all the things I need to do!

TeenLifeMum · 23/08/2023 19:16

I’m definitely aiming for a pass rather than a distinction (a real shift in mindset has been needed but 20 years out of the classroom I need to be kind on myself and my family).

dc are fab and supportive and dh is the most amazing guy, picking up my slack when I’m on deadline, proof reading stuff he has no idea about and probably bores him to death. I really couldn’t do it without them.

Queen of Procrastination here, yet still managed a part time degree, PGCE, part time MEd, part time MA and now there's a part time EdD in progress!
