Which direction

Hi everyone,

I am hoping you all might be able to give me some advice on what direction to choose.

A bit of background. I have always had an interest in fostering, adoption and childhood trauma. I have a degree in psychology and maths, although I was much better at the psychology part and I much preferred it.

I am currently a SEN TA. I love my job and it really works because my partner and child are both disabled. I also have a child that is still in preschool so childcare is difficult.

I have always been interested in SEN teaching, occupational therapy and social work. I have discounted social work because all of the training near me is too expensive and the hours are too unpredictable when out of the house.

I am still interested in SEN teaching and occupational therapy but I am also worried about the lack of flexibility, especially whilst training and on placement.

I have considered retraining in data science or computer science. This is only because I think it may be more flexible. Having a disabled partner and child means I could also do with increasing my earnings as much as possible, not to be rich but so we don't spend our lives living in poverty.

The trouble is I just don't know if I am really cut out for a detailed driven desk job. Maybe I might surprise myself. It is difficult to know. I feel I work best in jobs where there is a lot of variety, I can move around and some people contact but not huge groups of people all the time. I also love working with children.

Please give me some good advice on what may provide me with a fulfilling career that will not leave me poor forever either. Happy to consider other options too. Thanks.

Just to add I am also interested in social psychology and research so any info about these, then please tell me more!

I can’t help with regard to the subjects you’ve mentioned - but I think it’s all a bit hypothetical until you work out exactly how much time you would have available for any study. What help could you call on and how much flexibility could you build in to your days? The difficulty is that no intense training is likely to bend to fit around you, so you need to address that first.
