I am interested in learning to code. Partly because I think it will be fun, but also possibly with a view to retraining career wise.

I'm currently a musician and music education specialist, but I am losing the joy of it, and starting to find the precariousness of it a bit wearing.

I wonder if anyone could give me any advice on where to start looking? I have Googled a bit but there is so much out there I am feeling overwhelmed. I am thinking web design, app design, or software development might be good pathways but I like to keep an open mind. I am a knitter and enjoy translating a written instruction into a visual/tactile object.

Ideally I'm looking for a free intros as a hobby, and if I do take it forward career-wise I would be certainly open to paying for training.

I would appreciate any advice, especially courses you've taken, or ones to avoid.

Check out Code First Girls, they have eight week intro courses in various areas and then you can progress to a more intensive bootcamp style course linked to job opportunities. There's an active thread in this forum called CFG degree you can check out. All their courses are free and targeted at getting women in tech. I managed to successfully transition into tech this way (and am a fellow knitter 🙂)

Thank you! I was looking at Code First Girls so glad to hear them get a good mention!

Also look at Coursera who do recognised courses in all sorts of coding.

Thanks.

I suppose what I am looking for is something that will fit around my current non 9-5 job as I really need to continue earning while studying.

Are the government bootcamps recommended if you are serious about moving to a tech career?

100Devs is a free online full-stack web development bootcamp. The live classes have finished now but you can still access all the class videos on YouTube and follow along at your own pace.

There are lots of us in the 'catch-up crew' on Discord making our way through the bootcamp. I'd highly recommend it!

Angela Yu on Udemy is great, at least for an overview at the start (haven't made it all the way through the courses!). They cost but there are always offers and it's about £15/16 which for the content is good value!

Watching with interest @YourNextJobCouldBeInCyber as I’m also a musician (performer) and worried about where the industry is going.

Your user name is not lost on me 😂

I’m doing a code first girls course at the moment. Very good (and free) with opportunities to progress through courses. I have started with the web dev course.

@BabsDylan Haha! I'm sure we were all very cynical about it at the time!! :D

Thanks for all the advice everyone. Lots of choice!

I have been working through some Codecademy bits, and also making a mock up of a real life website by myself.

I would recommend Code Academy online ... they do lots of free tutorials in HTML, CSS, Java etc and is a great way to learn.
They also have a Pro Version you can pay for should you wish ... but I learned so much from Code Academy, it's great 🙂
