Nurse looking for a change!

Hi, any nurses here that have changed careers? I’m opened to ideas and suggestions.

I’m 43 and don’t want to do nursing anymore. My back is shot and I can’t give any more.

Ive been a nurse since I was 22 and apart from HR work when I was at uni I’ve no real experience of anything else.

I don’t even know what my dream job would be! I’m willing to take a pay drop to do an apprenticeship or the like. I would rather not go to uni I did a degee top up a few years ago.

I’m interested in IT but not sure what area!

I was going to ask if you’d considered becoming a Nurse Tutor - but Google doesn’t seem to lead to the type of official position within the profession that I’ve seen outside the UK.

Nannying?

We had a nanny who was previously a nurse, and I'm come across others who have come from a nursing background.

Obviously it will depend a lot on where you are, because most of the demand would be in cities
Salary-wise, a London nanny is on around £35-45k for a 45-50hr week, but there isn't any sort of career progression (although salaries have risen in the last couple of years)

There are many different avenues within Public health you could explore - still health related but not on the front line - more strategic.

Programme / project manager within NHS - look at ALBs here

Teaching in HEI

Drugs rep,
Medical secretary,
Clinical social worker.
Nutritionist.
Medical records writer.

Dotcheck · 27/10/2022 12:50

What sort of IT are you interested in?

Edmontine · 27/10/2022 13:01

Not IT - but you’d be in a strong position to become a Matron / Other relevant title in a boarding school house. You probably wouldn’t be required to do much or any actual nursing yourself - just oversee the health and well-being of pupils in the house and send them on to the right place for any specific treatment.

Generally a lovely environment, but longish hours.

Thank you for all the ideas- much appreciated! I found a careers fair and going to that in London in Nov see if I can get some more insite.

Edmontine- shame sounds interesting

tenbob- nannying isn’t my thing, I did look into it. I don’t want to do any more ‘caring’ if that makes sense.

Sunshineandflipflops- thanks didn’t think about public health. Will look into it.

Motnight- thanks wasn’t aware of these avenues.

Sago1 - will look into Clinical social worker never heard of that role.

Dotcheck- I don’t know that’s the problem. I was the go to for problem solving IT at work, I guess in an ideal world I’d like to do some broad IT training to learn more.

Edmontine- I did mat leave cover in a private school I did enjoy it but the pay isn’t great.

Have you considered School Nurse positions?

Always term time so lots of holiday and normal regular hours...

If you live in London here is an example of one: www.fejobs.com/job/college-nurse-1285496?lang=en-GB&frmsrh=Y
