Starting from scratch in late 40s - feasible?

Has anyone successfully retrained in their late 40s when their CV is a bit of a jigsaw puzzle? I got a good degree and worked in a professional role for a while, but MH issues in my 20s meant I left that career and drifted around a number of entry-level and dead-end jobs until spending a few years as a SAHM. I’ve been doing admin-type jobs with no prospect of advancement for the last three or four years, but really don’t want to stay doing that for another 20 years (finances aside!) Unlikely to ever want to go back to the original field (law) and have no grand vocation, which doesn’t help. Has anyone been in a similar situation and found their path?

Setting aside grand vocations, what are you interested in? (There must be something!)

(Have pm-d you, btw.)

Have replied to your PM, but: mild outside interests, but no major hobbies I could convert to a career. Decades of mild depression have made all my interests somewhat muted!

While you’re pondering … Be sure to send for degree transcripts long before you might need them, as some institutions can be slow to retrieve them.

Being in that nebulous state of knowing you need to move on, but not knowing anything more, is the hardest part. Once you discover the thing you want to do it’s likely everything will fall into place to enable you to start.

OP 100% yes. Decide or get guidance of what you want to work in and plan the steps accordingly. I know lots of people who changed careers in late forties and are really glad they did. Good luck 🤞

Career shifters are a good organisation

Other than that l’d look at industries that are short of people, and not especially agent.

It can certainly be done. Law is a v solid background.
