Funding for second degree

Am I right in thinking that I won't receive any government funding or student loan if I already have completed a degree?

Are there cheap private loans out there for this situation?

You can get it for a second part time undergraduate degree in a STEM subject, for a Master’s degree, and for certain postgrad qualifications such as a PGCE

ButNotTonight20 · 22/02/2022 20:49

Is there a list of stem subjects eligible?

If you’re in England you won’t get any maintenance, just the tuition.

I guess it’s different if your first degree was in the Arts and you need Science skills - but for anyone wanting to move from one branch of Arts / Humanities to another I’d always suggest investigating Master’s degrees rather than a second first degree. It’s so much more straightforward in terms of financing as almost everything qualifies for a Government Postgraduate Loan.

You can get funding if the qualification is higher than what you have already got. A lot of science and engineering courses lead to a masters rather than a bachelor's degree - if you have a BA in History and want to change careers to do Computer Science for example, then a Masters Degree is likely to get you more funding.

It's a BSc and I already have a BSc and it's not on any of the eligible lists unfortunately.

No you can apply for the maintenence loan but tuition fee loan is not available. DD has a BSc and now doing another (medicine).

You'll need to ask the uni what the fee arrangements are for LEQ students for this course (Lower and Equivalent Qualifications). If the course isn't on any exceptions list (eg if it's for something where there's already a surfeit of graduates) then you may even find it's more expensive than you expected. The £9,250 cap on fees doesn't reflect the actual cost of providing some science degrees and the cap doesn't apply to LEQ students so they are entitled to charge more if they need to.

You can receive full funding (tuition fee and maintenance loan) for a second degree in allied health profession, it can be Bsc or pre-reg Msc.
