NHS Scottish Student Nurse Bursary

I’m currently considering studying nursing, and trying to decide if this is financially viable for my family. I’m just wondering if there is any student nurses in Scotland here who are currently receiving the bursary.

I have a husband and a child. I understand I would receive the £10000 bursary yearly but would I get the dependents allowance for my child too? My husband works full time so I’m unsure if this would mean that we would not receive this part of the bursary. Also would we receive any help for child care (child would be in after school care).

Apologies if it’s obvious the wording on the website was confusing me (I’m sure most people would understand!

A huge thanks to anyone who can clear this up for me! Just trying to do the sums before taking the plunge!

Is this the correct website? (Linking here for anyone interested or knowledgeable.)

www.gov.scot/publications/support-nursing-midwifery-students-scotland-2021-2022/

I can’t help but someone else should know!

Yes, that's the correct website. Thank you, just struggling with the wording of it (I'm sure it's probably obvious though!)

Bumping as I don’t have time to explore the relevant info myself.

Hope someone can help!

Hey, so I get the bursary ( you get it monthly, but I didn't apply for child care etc as we didn't need it for our children. If you contact SSAS they can tell you what you will.be entitled to get as it may depend on income etc.

PocketFullOfPuddocks · 23/02/2022 20:25

I’m following this to see if anyone can help you as I have been wondering the same thing. The wording is quite unclear!

Bambozled33 · 23/02/2022 21:29

Thank you, the wording is confusing!

@salemcat do you get the dependents allowance for your children?

Have you seen this guide from SAAS?
www.saas.gov.uk/files/471/saas-nursing-midwifery-quick-guide.pdf
(Same info also on their website here under 'Funding' www.saas.gov.uk/full-time/funding-paramedic-nursing-midwifery)

"Nursing and Midwifery Student Bursary
All eligible students can apply for a Nursing and
Midwifery Student Bursary (NMSB). The bursary is not
income assessed.
[...]
Dependant’s Allowance
You may be eligible for a grant of up to £3,640
if you:
• have a partner who has a low income
• are registered as a carer for an adult
dependant (spouse, partner, or any other adult)
• have a child who is dependent on you"

I assume you only have to meet one of those 3 criteria, but it's not completely clear.

TottersBlankly · 24/02/2022 13:40

Without reading any further I would certainly assume an applicant need meet only one of those criteria.

Although ‘may be eligible’ is a bit stress inducing …

Bambozled33 · 24/02/2022 16:19

Yeah I’ve read the quick guide. However it’s not clear, it’s the ‘may’ that’s confusing. Especially when trying to figure out finances. It’s like they don’t want you to know!

Was hoping someone who’s doing it already might be able to answer!

I would just shoot an email to SAAS, though it might be a couple weeks before you get a response!

@Bambozled33

Thank you, the wording is confusing!

@salemcat do you get the dependents allowance for your children?

Sorry, haven't been about. No, I don't qualify for it as my husband earns too much.
MandUs · 01/04/2022 11:08

Bit late but no, you wouldn't qualify for the dependant's allowance. Unless your husband earns under the threshold which is ridiculously low, not even minimum wage. I don't know anyone with a working partner who receives this part of the bursary.

I'm a 3rd year student nurse.

Bambozled33 · 02/04/2022 08:19

That’s a great help, thank you!
