I was wondering how many of you are studying with the OU? My first module started yesterday and so far I'm really impressed with how well organised it all is. I'm also finding myself much more motivated and interested than I was first time around.

I'm studying module U116, Journeys through a Changing World, and am hoping to achieve a qualification in Environmental Science.

Oh can I join, currently in Y2 of a psychology degree, studying DE100. Like others I did DD102 in year 1. I really enjoy it, quite often approach the week's work with dread but then immediately find it interesting. Last year my tutor was great, this year not so much, she didn't even email to say hello and the feedback is crap.

Tulipblacksmith · 13/04/2022 15:06

@hopperrock

I’ve done that module, I still use the books that came with DE100.

cavalatete · 13/04/2022 15:44

I'm going to do DE300 this year. Had to postpone last year. It'll be my last module (assuming I pass!)

Tulipblacksmith · 13/04/2022 15:55

I am sure you will @cavalatete

Final module for me this September. It’s took me 7 years in total (one deferral).

I’m ready for it to be over.

@BareBelliedSneetch
Hi - would you mind telling me about your Environmental Science studies and the work it has helped you to get into now?

TravellingSpoon · 13/04/2022 17:14

Anyone else in FB/Whatsapp support groups that are just full of everyone asking each other if they have had there TMA back yet?

Its driving me bonkers. It was due in last Thursday and the group went wild from Friday with people asking. I know its tough waiting but seriously!

shivbo2014 · 13/04/2022 17:47

Haha you must be in my WhatsApp group! Our assignment was due in last Thursday and it's been non stop asking if people have received results since. Also, the same questions being asked about the TMA over and over again. I don't mind too much as I'd think I'd feel quite isolated without the groups but I have had to turn off notifications!

Tulipblacksmith · 13/04/2022 18:20

I had to remove myself from the groups as initially in my first module I was getting TMA marks in the low 50s and literally nobody was publishing any marks as low as that. So in the end I just removed myself and concentrated on just competing against myself.

Just received my highest TMA mark at level 3 (89 percent) so I’ve really come on since the early days. Hoping to finish with a 2:1.

debbs77 · 13/04/2022 18:43

I've often looked at their degrees, but cannot afford them. I have a BSc from 2000, so not sure if that still counts towards credits or not?

Tulipblacksmith · 13/04/2022 20:28

@debbs77

There are a number of degrees via the OU that are eligible for a second round of tuition fee loan from student finance.

TravellingSpoon · 17/04/2022 09:06

Ive muted my groups too, Its the same questions over and over, and people asking if they have had thier TMA results back yet. I thought it would be helpful but maybe its because this is a first module for lots of us, people are nervous.

debbs77 · 17/04/2022 15:58

Ooh I'll take a look, thank you

Hi, what do you want to know? The job I do now requires a degree in “biological sciences” and my Env Sci OU degree was enough to count!

I really enjoyed doing it. And learnt a lot. (As you’d hope from a degree!)

OnGoldenPond · 20/04/2022 15:43

Both my DM and DF did degrees with the OU which helped them greatly with career progression. DM was able to do a PGCE afterwards then worked in an FE college as a lecturer. DF was able to back up his extensive engineering experience with the intellectual groundwork to be able to become a senior manager at a national engineering firm.

Good luck with your studies FlowersSmile

AuntTwacky · 20/04/2022 16:30

I did undergrad and postgrad degrees with OU... loved it!

Lunar27 · 22/04/2022 10:20

The OU is 53 today!

I love the OU as a student and previous employee. Such a great institution and we'll done to all for being a part of a progressive university.

It's bloody hard work but so rewarding. All the best to those still on their journey.

Glwysen · 23/04/2022 11:41

Hi, anyone done any physics with the OU?

I did 120 credits in maths at level 2 about 20 years ago which I loved, but it feels a very different proposition (and much riskier) now the fees are so much higher.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 06/07/2022 10:08

Late to the party but I am currently in second year of my nurse training through the OU, employer sponsored. Really enjoying it, love that it’s part time including the placements so not as full on as brick uni nursing and still get your full pay.

We do have tutorials, all of which are mandatory now, we get out into groups to discuss things. I prefer this way of learning and do not miss the class room environment I find this far more stimulating although some of the module stuff feels a bit much at times.

We so have WhatsApp groups but as others have said it’s always the same questions which the answers to can be found by actually spending time accessing the home page

AlRRRR · 09/03/2023 18:19

I’ve just come across your thread I am actually starting to think of doing the environmental science degree with the open university!

AlRRRR · 09/03/2023 18:27

Hello, I’m thinking of going to the open University in study in environmental science, BSC honours degree!

Has anybody done this?

I currently have two children and I’m working two days a week and get universal credit support so I’m hoping to fit it around that!

Amy

EdmontinaDonsAutumnalHues · 10/03/2023 09:12

@AlRRRR you might find it better to start a new thread? Tap the Mature Study title board at the top of the page and it will give you that option.

EdmontinaDonsAutumnalHues · 10/03/2023 09:13

Although - there are several OU threads already here. You might find a few of them answer all your questions.

EdmontinaDonsAutumnalHues · 25/04/2023 07:15

Worth bumping this for new people considering the OU.

evilharpy · 29/04/2023 09:36

I'm half considering doing an OU degree. I'd like to do something like Data Science although it looks quite maths-heavy and I haven't studied maths for such a long time so I'd probably need to brush up on the basics first.

Has anyone studied Data Science, or anything with a lot of maths/statistics?
