Ambient, long-life snacks/food

Lunch is provided where I work, decent food and decent portions. But I am concerned that I will not be able to avoid carbs or eat enough protein when I start eating HFLC.

There is no facility for cooking, though I may be able to have a small sealed tub in a fridge. We are not allowed to bring meat or nuts onsite.

What can I keep in my locker, to supplement my lunch, if necessary, or have as snack? The only thing I can think of is packs of seeds.

Hard boiled egg?
Chunk of cheese?
Protein yoghurt?
Tub of cottage cheese?
Above could be kept in a small space in the fridge.

Tin of tuna or other fish for ambient.

I know you said no meat- but is that just fresh meat/ham sandwich etc. Would dried pork scratching's or biltong be allowed? Is it a food production facility, hence no meat or nuts? Does that include no fish?

Could you go offsite and eat elsewhere? 😬

I often take a snack pot filled with cubes of cheese and olives to leave in the fridge. Roasted chickpeas are nice. Carrot and cucumber sticks with hummus too.

Protein Yogurt, pop it in a thermos in the feudge at home the night before to keep it cool at work if no fridge. I stock up on these when they are on offer;

Huel black powder, mix with cold water when you are at work, I make mine up quite thin, 1 scoop = 200kcal = 20g protein in about 750ml water and I have two a day as snacks to hit protein and water intake targets.

Can you keep stuff in your car and eat in there?

I live on nuts as they are low volume but highly dense in nutrition

You could take those tuna salad pots, I would have said pepperami or things like that, a hot flask of lentil soup, can you have curry in in a hot flask, would anyone even know there was meat in it

Why no meat anyway?

What's the deal with the provided lunch? I was on a catered site for a few weeks once whilst doing low carb and made a point of getting friendly with the catering manager. He was great at suggesting ways to adapt what was on offer and towards the end I basically got a special plate!

Could you try to have a conversation even if it's just about what's on the menu tomorrow so that you can perhaps bring in extra bits if it's particularly unfriendly (eg pasta bake!)

FusionChefGeoff · 09/01/2025 20:03

Generally though the fridge tub will have to be your main option as the ambient options are hard especially without nuts and meat!

I wouldn't mind celery / green beans kept at room temp but that's a bit dull - more bearable if you can add a nice cheese and onion creamy dip.

Nearly all the baking / recipes I used have ground almonds in them which is no use.

You can make a very acceptable low carb bread using some very specialist ingredients that's worth investing in if you're doing it long term

JC03745 · 09/01/2025 20:38

I missed that you have access to a fridge.

-Skyrr type yoghurts, and bring in oats/berries/chia seeds to mix in
-Cheese spread/cream cheese, high fibre crackers/pumpernickel and whatever toppings are lower carb
-Lower carb crackers/rye breads with mackerel pate/cucumber/dill
-Crustless quiche/fritatta- with whatever low carb fillings you like

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 09/01/2025 20:45

Tinned fish ? Beans and lentils in a tin or pouch - or are these too high carb ?

This might be the way.

If I can use the fridge, I'll keep a tub of individual cheese portions there. I really don't want things that I have to remember to eat before they go off, or that will pong when I eat them in either the staff room or the office, or that I have to prepare at home before work (already a rush).

I'm hoping that I will be able to eat from the staff canteen, and that these things will just be in case I can't.
