I've only just started trying to eat this way so please could anyone knowledgeable cast an experienced eye over a couple of example days from the last week?

B - 2 poached eggs with fried tomatoes

L - Spinach, tinned tomatoes, black olives and fried halloumi

T - chicken fajita x 2 (chicken, peppers, onions and spice mix) in 2 sweet potato wraps, sour cream, grated reduced fat cheddar.

Another day

B - strawberries and watermelon with plain natural yoghurt

L - lean steak mince with onions and peas, spinach, cauliflower and gravy

T - mixed salad, leaves, onion, peppers, spinach black olives, hardboiled egg and fried halloumi with dressing.

Am drinking tea and coffee with milk aswell...

Honestly - an ad hoc mixture with a calorie deficit will result in weight loss.

But the OP isn’t counting calories so doesn’t know if she is in calorie deficit.

And anyone who isn't in a calorie deficit won't lose weight. It's guess work to try any diet/eating plan/whatever you want to call it without ensuring this. Which is why these things don't work for everyone. For a lot of people cutting out the things they were eating which caused them to put on weight will result in a calorie deficit. But, if you are too restrictive you're just setting yourself up to fail.

That was me! Whilst I am totally on board with what I consider to be a low carb diet, I am no fan of Atkins or strict keto, both of which can be potentially risky. I also fear that being totally focused on reducing carbs to extremely low levels could potentially lead to disordered eating.

I also agree that...
as you only have a stone to lose, I wouldn’t bother about the details too much. Find a level of carbs that works for you and stick to it until you’ve lost the weight.

I believe that keeping to a healthy weight in the long term requires long-term healthy eating. To me that means what could be described as a modified Mediterranean diet: Lots of vegetables/plants, moderate amounts of lean protein, plus some complex/unrefined carbs, dairy and healthy fats.

I lost most of my excess weight - 33 lb or so - back in 2014. And I have kept it off ever since.

I did it by eating healthily - see above. It took a while, but I am still following the general principles to this day:

"a modified Mediterranean diet: Lots of vegetables/plants, moderate amounts of lean protein, plus some complex/unrefined carbs, dairy and healthy fats."

Intermittent fasting has become a way of life:

  • 2-egg omelette with vegetables or a 'massive' salad + 2 boiled eggs around 10-11 am
  • A snack of fruit, nuts or yoghurt in the afternoon
  • Dinner of LOTS of vegetables and a fair amount of lean protein (chicken or salmon), plus a small portion of lentils, chickpeas or quinoa

And exercise. Every. Single. Day.

Walking.
Stairs instead of taking the lift.
50-60 minutes working out.
6 days a week.
Started off with Lucy Wyndham Read
Progressed to Rebecca Louise, Heather Robertson, Jake Dupree etc
HIIT with Growingannanas
Discovered Caroline Girvan and never looked back.

Keeping the weight off gets harder as we age. However, I'm nearly 70 and fitter than most 40-year-olds. Actually, fitter than most women in their 30s, judging by what I observe. Which is very sad, but this is where years of meal-deals, take-outs and other 'I don't know how/can't be bothered' attitudes to food/cooking have led us.

NB: I spend about 30-40 minutes a day on meal prep. Plus 50-60 minutes on exercising. Less than many people spend watching TV.

Apologies for the sermon!
