Ideas for low carb meals when you can’t sit down!

Need to lose some weight post second baby, but trying to eat with toddler and a baby isn’t the easiest! I do best losing weight eating lower carb, but don’t have a lot of time to cook in the day and end up eating mostly on the go and/or with one hand, which makes things like omelettes (my top breakfast choice) a challenge, and end up eating a lot of bread, and tbh a lot of chocolate which there’s less excuse for 😂 things like soup are also impossible, but I am a confident cook so with a bit of thinking should be ok.

I’m breastfeeding a 5mo so can’t go too low carb or low calorie at the moment too, but definitely need to make more changes.

Dinner is easier as DH is around to wrangle the toddler while I cook, but if anyone has any ideas for easy to make low carb breakfast and lunches I can eat with one hand whilst moving it’d be much appreciated!

What about breakfast egg muffins that you can cook the night before (and freeze) just to zap in a microwave?

Pressed post too soon!

You can vary the fillings so you don't get bored :-)

Keep boiled eggs, ham/cheese rolitos, crudites, cooked chicken in the fridge.

For lunch I'd probably just look at a large salad where you can throw stuff in a bowl with dressing and eat with a fork (you could prep the salad the night before and just throw the dressing on when you eat).

For example:

Maybe buy prepared sandwich fillings like tuna mayo, egg and bacon, chicken and bacon...either eat as is or use iceberg lettuce as a wrap.
Honestly when I was home with mine when they were little I lived on Haribo. The twin babies are 10, and the then toddler 11 and I'm still trying to lose the "baby weight" and fight sugar addiction.
Definitely do what you can to get a handle on it now! I should take note of some of my ideas!

That's a good idea.

Get in lots of pre-prepared salad and add a blob of sandwich or humous etc filling to make a meal of it.

I'd also recommend frozen soya beans. You can defrost them under a tap in two mins.

Great for protein and tasty to throw into a salad and give a nice texture.

Plain yogurt with berries is a great low carb breakfast which feels a bit treat-like.

For lunches can you make an extra portion of the low carb dinner that you have the night before? Maybe buy a pack of low carb rolls to eat on days where this isn’t possible?

For snacks you could keep some peeled boiled eggs in the fridge, and some small packs of nuts in the cupboard.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 29/05/2023 19:24

Could you make up a crustless quiche or frittata to have in the fridge and just grab a slice when you're hungry?

Low carb snacks that are easy to have on hand:

  • cottage cheese (Longley farms full fat, Iceland, Asda, Morrisons or home bargains. It's way better than any other)
  • cheesestring/babybel
  • beef jerky
  • hard boiled eggs
  • full fat Greek yoghurt

I'm a big fan of lettuce wraps. Make or pull out from the fridge whatever is easy. Put it on a lettuce leaf. Roll and eat.

Yes I’ve made this sort of thing in the past, that or frittatas do work well when I take the time to prep. End up eating so many eggs though!

Prepping is key isn’t it?! Yes this is the answer, I just need to find the time to sort things out

@ThisIsntMyUsualUsername I try and avoid too much unnecessary plastic but definitely can work harder to get things premade. We always have tuna mayo made up in the fridge because my toddler loves it. And thanks, I am generally pretty kind to myself but I’ve definitely tipped over into ‘uncomfortable’ and I feel unfit so want to do something now. Doesn’t help that the weight fell off breastfeeding DS while I ate a family sized bar of chocolate a day, but this time the fat is hanging on for dear life 😂

@Namechangedforthis2244 proper fat Greek yogurt is brilliant, but I seem to find myself hungry again soon after eating it. Even a big portion. Will keep trying though, see if I can reset a bit. Could do a bit of overnight jumbo oats with it while I’m breastfeeding and not going too low carb

@ODFOx oh I so wish I could get with these, but my brain won’t accept them! Just feels wrong 😂 like I love a sweet potato but when they’re made into chips my brain just says ‘these aren’t chips’. I’ll give them another go

Yes, I understand on the packaging waste. Maybe prepare some things to keep your own Tupperware deli counter going in the fridge!

BuffaloCauliflower · 30/05/2023 14:20

@FatAgainItsLettuceTime yes I made a big frittata and did just this a few weeks ago, and it was great. Clearly I just need to make the time to prep stuff

Anything from the deli counter
very high meat content sausages (cook night before and store in fridge)
celery sticks to dip in peanut or almond butter
Enjoy c

I tend to travel with bags of nuts or dark chocolate. I also find a tub of olives or pepper's good to pick at.

LadyBird1973 · 18/06/2023 11:55

I'm not sure why breastfeeding means you can't do low carb. It's basically meat, fish, eggs, green veg, with some cream and cheese. You could have some berries and a few nuts if you felt it was needed. None of that will reduce milk supply or cause any harm - it's a very healthy diet. All you'd be missing is empty carbs and root veg, which although lovely, are not necessary.
