Diabetes + low carb

EnormousStuffedMarrow · 13/12/2022 21:32

I've had diabetes for years and never really taken care of myself properly in terms of diet.
I am now suffering the consequences of that and have been told I have eye damage.

I am now trying to do a low carb diet but am struggling- when I read the threads here and elsewhere I don't feel confident I can stick to it.

I've had a small bit of chocolate three times in the last month. No cakes or biscuits. A huge change for me. I'm really proud that I have made that change.

I'm testing my blood sugar several times a day and it's doing pretty well. A Pret bacon roll did send it very high! And porridge is now a no go area but I'm keeping it around the 6.5 mark as far as possible.

But the food situation is miserable. I work full time and don't have time to make extravagant breakfasts, I don't really like eating meat every day so dinners are becoming tricky.

I was out on Saturday afternoon and went for a cup of tea...but no mince pie.

Where is the joy? I love food and I can't imagine living the rest of my life like this. I know it's my fault but how can I get more enjoyment from food?

So, I lost 3 stone, put my T2 in remission, felt amaze. All low carb hardcore for 3 months at 800-1000 cals and was maintaining at 1500 cals. And then I started HRT and have put a stone back and I feel crap I can't stick to it and nowi feel bad i think what the hell and eat all the delicious food. Hormones have made me voracious andi have no control. I really need to get a grip again

I'm going to start again. A month reset at 1000 cals and zero booze. Intermittent fasting works (16:8 is recommended even12:12 will have some impact. Too many eggs for brek was tedious. Couldn't make it on no breakfast so I have 40g oatbran with oat milk - seems to fill me up lovely and not spike too much. Bacon medallions and 2 eggs with 100g mushrooms and a tomato is about 300 cals. I do that at weekends.
For chocolate I buy some 25/26g bars of dark so I am not tempted to eat all of a bigger bar. That's a weekly treat at the weekend.

I think you're going great with how you started. Don't underestimate the importance of exercise even just walking half an hour. I think having stopped made it easier to just fall off all the waggon. It was also 100x easier in lockdown.

For me it's also really difficult that most easy out of home food options are carb based eg sandwiches and you can't always take something with you and almonds don't really excite,do they?

Anyway this is long. You're not alone. Find your way through it and if you fall off the wagon, don't beat up on yourself, just get back on.

Dinners - my can't be arsed dinner is linda mac sausages and a small tin of beans. Easy and yummy. 3 bean chili in the slow cooker and butternut and spinach curry are go to's here.

Fried egg, mushrooms, halloumi, spinach extra thick cream. Cream in your coffee.

EnormousStuffedMarrow · 13/12/2022 21:58

Thank all, I appreciate it.

I've tried the high fat yoghurt, cream in coffee etc (which I love!) but I have been getting gallstone flare ups so have had to cut back on too much high fat.

Yes I'm feeling sick of eggs already! Could up my avocado intake though.

It's just the thought of all those things I shouldn't eat, that I love. But I guess I have to balance that with not wanting to go blind.

That’s tough! Low carb without lots of fat is difficult.

I'm trying to low carb too OP, for different reasons. I'm finding I'm very motivated (I'm struggling with infertility and I've read good things about IVF success on a high protein/low carb diet) but like you, I don't find the menu particularly appetising!

For breakfast I have oatcakes with peanut butter and either some cheese or a couple of hard boiled eggs. I find eggs quite difficult to stomach without carbs alongside - they make me feel slightly sick. So I can't eat loads of them.

For lunch I usually have a weird mishmash of things. Olives, cheese, an omelette, some salad, nuts, Greek yoghurt, berries. I love marmite, avocado and chilli flakes on toast but that pushes the carb quota.

I'm eating more meat than I usually would and like you would like some non-meat ideas that don't involve eggs! I love a chilli which I have with yoghurt and homemade guacamole. Or salmon with roast veggies. I'll do a chicken curry with extra veg tomorrow.

Following in case anyone else has better ideas. Best of luck to you.

countrypunk · 14/12/2022 11:46

Oh and I've become obsessed with Lindt 90% dark chocolate! Delicious.

Have you tried getting a diabetes recipe book? I have the Phil Vickery one recommended here: diabetes.gifts/top-5-diabetic-recipe-books/ Tons of low carb ideas and I just cook on a Sunday and eat throughout the week. Works well for me!

For what it's worth I was the same as you and linked food to happiness. If you stick with it, this will pass and you will find happiness in other things. It's just your brain playing defence.

Hi Op, I feel your pain. I was diagnosed with diabetes in July 22, I decided to reduced my carbs to 130g a day, I was told there are 2 thoughts when first diagnosed, either do something like the Newcastle Diet or the gradual reduction of carbs, I opted for the later as I wanted something I could stick to.

When I was diagnosed my HbA1C was 80, my visceral fat was 16 (excessive) my BMI 35, I had fatty liver and high choleterol (9.4) I weighed 14 stone 4 and wore size 24 clothes. Since 1st July I gave up smoking, and use the Nutra Check App, stick to 1200 calories a day and eat a lot of protein and green veg, I also still have chocolate but the 85% dark chocolate. I am now a size 10 and have lost almost 5 stone, my diabetes is in remission and I am never hungry (I was in the beginning but was frightened by the stories of what may happen and when my carbs were reduced, I stopped craving them)

A typical day for me is

Porridge, with semi skimmed milk, frozen cherries and I melt a square of dark chocolate in it, so it tastes like a black forest gateau, Although there are carbs in porridge I eat it to reduce my cholesterol and include it in my daily total allowance of carbs.

Lunch - Scrambled egg or an omelete with a green salad.

Dinner - Chicken with vegetables, gravy, or sometimes I have a curry with veg instead of rice, or vegan sausages with ratatouile,

I snack on nuts, greek yoghurt and sometimes cheese if my protein is low for the day.

My plates are always full, I have so much veg it really does fill me up.

I sometimes have a slice of wholemeal bread with peanut butter, I eat 1 potato with a roast dinner, I have discovered Yorkshire puddings dont raise my BG too, I tested my blood before and after eating, make sure you only test 2 hours after eating as even non diabetics will get a rise in BG before 2 hours, its as long as your majority of time is between 4 and 7 you will lower your overall risk.

There is an excellent diabetes UK forum which I post on regularly, the people are very kind and knowledgeable. There is a cooking thread with photos of low carb meals and loads of recipes to make your favourite meals with less carbs.

I am 57 and have spent the last 10 years getting fatter and living off lots of carbs, I thought I wouldnt manage it but it was the wake up call I needed.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions or just want to chat
