Do you reckon Paleo or Keto is best for auto-immune inflammation issues?

I have googled but the paleo websites are pro paleo and the keto websites are pro keto and the official studies I have come across just say low carb in general or talk about fruit.
Apart from cottage cheese which bloats me no end, I think I'm ok with butter, hard cheese and cream in my coffee. Dairy is a no no on Paleo but ok on Keto.

Does anyone have personal experience on doing paleo or keto for the purpose of controlling auto-immune conditions and to reduce inflammation?

On my list of food oily fish, avocados, cabbage, blueberries, natural almond butter (dodgy teeth can't bite into whole nuts) I don't eat processed meat so it wouldn't be 'dirty lazy keto' but I do love cheese. Just wondering if I should do paleo or keto? thanks

Mediterranean diet: high protein will be high saturated fat which is inflammatory.

You need lots of lean chicken, fish, egg, avocado, salmon, almonds... the 'good' fats (unsaturated). Not to mention fruit and veg galore!

oh you think Med diet instead of them? I don't do well on beans and grains (digestive issues) but I know I do well on the foods you mentioned. I eat red meat maybe once every 4 months. I will look into med diet as I really want my health to improve. Thank you for your comment.

My personal experience of Keto is that I think it reduces inflammation in my joints & so can manage any pain a lot easier. I am 64 & have experienced sore back & neck issues most of my life from a car accident, also have mild to moderate sciatic pain & have had carpal tunnel in the past few years.
When I reduce carbs I find that I feel much less bloated & my movements in general are less painful - I have a manual job in a supermarket with lots of lifting, bending, stretching etc.
Others may find their own balance elsewhere but Keto works for me. Not absolutely strict & rigid with the rules but I have lost 12 kgs, sleep so much better & my brain feels clearer.

I don’t know the answer but do focus on gut health too (pre and probiotics ) . This made a massive difference to me and 80% of the immune system is within the gut or something

@eenymeenymineymo I definitely feel my joints less achy and my stomach is so much flatter and calmer on keto. I did keto for 6 months and Paleo for maybe 10 months before many years ago. My teeth and gums felt better on keto, my brain was sharper. On paleo where I had higher carbs from nuts and berries and no dairy my skin and hair were amazing. When I did them I didn't have the autoimmune issues that have come up now though so can't compare. 12kg is bloody fantastic!! I really loved reading your comment with all the positive benefits you're feeling on keto. I would normally try both and see but I'm so desperate to take control of these conditions that I don't want to 'waste' time experimenting but deep down I think you're right about finding what works for me and my 'sweet spot' as it were.

@ChickpeaFlour I hear and read so much about gut health. I had an unpleasant experience of painful bloating when I took some probiotics (chocolate covered ones from Holland and Barrett) and never looked again into them. Do you recommend any particular brand? I will look into boosting gut health as I had a year of antibiotics and persistent infections so my poor gut must be in a state.

whereareyanow poor you and I wonder if you can build it up very slowly. We used Probio7 and another one I think might have been called Biocult. They were quite expensive but either that or pregnancy seems to have cured my autoimmune issues ! And the probio7 definitely got rid of DS’ anxiety. I also made homemade kefir for ages (it’s easy to make but even I had to start slowly as it upset my stomach Taken too fast)

I do keto for inflammation issues and feel so much better. I have also looked into carnivore and Paul Saladino, who advocates eliminating seed oils to stop inflammation. I've cut out milk - have 2 coffees a day ( black), and have seen a massive improvement in my breathing ( cough after covid) and the cough has disappeared. Paul Saladino has a range of supplements on his website but as they don't deliver to the UK I have looked at getting the ones from Hunter Gatherer instead . I already have collagen from Hunter Gatherer. I think its a little bit of trial and error in finding what suits you, but keto is know for healing the body

hamstersarse · 10/08/2022 09:53

I have been keto for a while and there is no doubt it helps with reducing inflammation - but I am also starting to be more interested in the Paul Saladino approach.

I think one of the reasons I have felt so much better on keto is because I have eliminated all seed oils and eat more animal fat and animal products. I have started to introduce fruit for this reason - apples, bananas, strawberries etc.

I think it is true that pulses and seeds are/can be inflammatory - Paul Saladino talks about why on earth a plant would want us to eat their seeds. Fruit is specifically designed to get us to eat everything but the seed for example - seeds are the most defended part of a plant and are high in linoleic acid which in short, accumulates in your fat cells and possibly cause insulin resistance.

Anything that cuts out seed oils and seeds is probably going to be effective in reducing inflammation - and if you look at our food environment, it is literally everywhere, you have to work very hard not to eat it at all.

@ChickpeaFlour Thanks for getting back to me with brands names and I'm fascinated to hear that your DS's anxiety improved with Probio7. I've tried Kefir once and thought it was alright - I'll try and make it. I suspect I rushed into probiotics, too much too soon. Obviously need to work on my patience and realistic expectations as this is a life long thing now.

@eggsandbaconeveryday Thank you for your comment. I have heard about carnivore. I think I will see how I get on with some vegetables and a bit of fruit and if I see no improvement I will reassess because I mentally find it incredibly hard to just eat eggs and meat particularly as don't like red meat... but if I see no improvement I may well try it. I will check out his supplements as I'm good with taking supplements and find them an easy shortcut to be healthier.

@hamstersarse oooh another one mentioning Paul Saladino! I will be googling him and reading about his approach. I never thought about seed in this way: why would a plant want you to eat its seed effectively annihilating its offspring and DNA. I have been using rapeseed oil in the past 2 years when prior to that I rarely cooked with fat and when I did it was butter or coconut oil. A lot of processed food have seed oil so by avoiding it you end up avoiding a lot of processed junk, too. Thank you for your comment.

I hadn't either, but it seems so obvious when you think about it!

Then you read the impact of the seeds on the body with what are essentially their defense chemicals and there is an 'aha' moment.

I would absolutely cut out rape seed oil as a first point of call

WhereAreYaNow · 10/08/2022 11:06

@hamstersarse I can easily cut out rapeseed oil from my cooking. This is a very painless way to get healthier. 95% of what I now eat is homemade so it should be easy to get seed oil out of my diet.

This is why I love asking on MN! Thank you everyone for your comments.

Carnivore is the ultimate anti-inflammatory diet.

fallfallfall · 11/08/2022 04:58

The Galveston Diet by Dr Mary Claire Haver is specifically anti inflammatory for women.
