Is there an approximate amount to aim to?

Thanks Smile

Unfortunately it's not that simple - it depends entirely on what kind of approach you're taking.

If you're doing keto, then it's no more than 20g carbs per day (I think).

If you're doing Atkins, then it's 20g carbs per day in the induction phase, which is the first two weeks. Thereafter you're gradually building up the carbs per day till you reach a point where you start to gain weight again.

Michael Mosley's Fast800 Keto would say up to 50g carbs per day.

(Sorry if that isn't helpful, but it's much less 'cut and dry' when you low carb compared with calorie counting!)

20g net carbs per day (carbs minus fibre)

It’s pretty challenging after a week or two, hardly any fruit and veg

Hi, thanks for the replies. I'm trying to stay between 20 and 50g for two weeks and see how that goes.

Fingers crossed!

20g of net carbs a day is the general rule.
If you want to go as far as tracking your ketone levels , then you may get a more precise number.

In the UK we don't have to work out net carbs too much because Fibre is given as a separate number to begin with on food packaging. but if relying on google and internet for nutrional information of an ingredient, then fibre is under carbs so can deduct fibre. Similar on myfitnesspal , fibre is under carbs...!

I know people that can be on 70g of carbs a day and still be in ketosis, depends on size and activity level i guess.

No - 20g net carbs a day isn't the general rule! All low carb plans are different and have different amounts of carbs that they recommend. some are phased as well, like Atkins or The Idiot Proof Diet.

@BIWI - I misread and thought this post was about Keto, and responded accordingly.

This isn’t correct for the uk. The fibre is already deducted in carb listings for uk and eu foods, so generally they list net carbs (unless they contain polyols, they usually need to be deducted from total carbs). It’s American foods that need the fiber deducting to get net carbs. Note the different spelling of fibre, makes it easier to spot European and North American recipes and nutritional listings.
