Running and low-carb

DH's consultant has suggested he try a low carb diet to help with his issues. I've said I'll do it to for moral support and encouragement.
However, I do a lot of running (5-6 days a week of about an hour) plus a competition once a week. I'm slightly apprehensive about competing on low carb though. Has anyone managed to keep running/racing whilst low carbing?
I know I could add in extra carbs during the day but that would defeat the purpose of helping DH. Would an energy bar before a race be ok...open to other ideas...

Many thanks

Once you get past the initial 'hero flu' you'll probably find your running improves/gets easier.

What sort of distances do you run?

If it's less than about 10k, it shouldn't make any difference. If you are going longer, then yes you probably do need to keep your carbs up. So either add carbs just for you to the meal the night before the levels no runs (I hope your DH is as supportive if your running as you are of his diet). And use blocks/gels from early in the run.

up to 10k shouldn't be an issue.
I notice you say low carb not no carb, that should be fine.

In the first couple of weeks, while your body is transitioning from burning carbs for fuel to burning fat for fuel, you may struggle a bit. But after that you'll be fine. You may even find that you run better.

There's a really good book called The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Performance which will explain it much better than I can!
