One week sugar free. It wasn't as hard as I thought!

Typical day - breakfast- chicken cheese and bacon omelette. Lunch - big salad with green beans, spinach, cashew nuts, Greek yoghurt for dressing, smoked salmon. Dinner- meatballs with tomato sauce and broccoli.

I managed to sidestep a work buffet by just putting vegetable sticks, hummus, cold meat and blueberries on my plate. There were scones and cakes but I wasn't tempted.

Eating plenty of protein and enough fat is key. My clothes feel looser already 😀

Well done. I need to do this!!

Billybagpuss · 04/07/2021 05:08

Well done it’s absolutely worth it. I find it has to be right time for me.

I would say it gets harder every time. As the body seems to know what’s coming and resists it but once you’re past week 2 it gets much easier.

This is my third time of stopping but the first for being very strict. I have had no sugar since March 5 feel much better my motivation was health, pre diabetes concerns. But the happy side effect is a 2 stone weight loss.

The only weird moments were the week the gyms reopened and I was able to swim again I had very vivid dreams about oversized, talking, iced chocolate cupcakes.

That's brill, well done!
I want to do the same, as I've recently given up alcohol, but have replaced it with sugar binges. I feel gross for it and probably worse than I did when I was drinking.
So something has got to give. Have you followed a specific plan / method? Or just done your own thing?
And are you including bread, rice, pasta etc in the definition of sugar?
I'm vegetarian, so not sure if this would make it more difficult?
Any advice OP, for where to begin?

For me I’ve given up obvious sugar and processed food. We hardly have bread any more and have pasta about once a fortnight. I do drink wine but only at weekends but have cut all sugary drinks so all I drink is water tea and wine.
Sweetener12 · 06/07/2021 12:04

Wow, that's cool! I've done a sugar free week that turned into a month somehow but I ate lots of fruits and avoided processed sugar only.

Waveafterwaveslowlydrifting · 21/07/2021 03:19

It's been about 5 weeks now. I haven't weighed as I get obsessed but I can fit into clothes a size smaller comfortably.

I'm virtually never hungry. I used to be ravenous all the time with the sugar spikes. It's great. I've lost the emotional attachment to food.

No bread, pasta, rice or potatoes. No refined sugar. Very limited fruit, mainly berries. Loads of green veg, eggs, meat, Greek yoghurt, nuts, avocado, cheese.

Same here. I've cut out all carbs & sugar and feel great. I've had a lot of social things and plenty of white wine but I still feel that I've lost weight. I'm switching to gin though. Remember to drink plenty of water

Billybagpuss · 21/07/2021 05:49

Well done that’s incredible

I’m 4.5 months now, I do weigh obsessively but am on holiday now which is a bit liberating but my wine consumption has definitely increased. But yesterday I managed to fit into a size 16 coat. Ok it was snug and I certainly wouldn’t fit a jumper under it but yay. My last coat was a size 20 Barbour but I do think Barbour come up very small.

That's great @Billybagpuss and I bet you felt so happy 😊

I’m actually tempted to go back and buy it, at this rate by September it’ll fit with a jumper too 😂
LadyMcLadyface · 22/07/2021 10:46

@Waveafterwaveslowlydrifting do you have any tips for staying motivated/getting started? I tried low carb before and found it really suited me but only managed a few weeks and now I'm struggling to get back into it! Got a horrendous sugar addiction 😖 vegetarian as well which makes it a bit trickier...

Billybagpuss · 22/07/2021 17:50

@LadyMcLadyface for me I had a massive sugar binge and felt disgusting and ill and declared that was it I was giving up.

I’ve literally just cut all sugar and ready meals. So eat whatever you want as long as cooked from scratch and doesn’t contain sugar. I’ve found carbs have naturally reduced but I’m not actively avoiding them. I’ve not had much rice as it would usually be accompanied by a processed sauce. Ditto pasta.

Probably having quality bread 2 or 3 times a week, potatoes most days

Waveafterwaveslowlydrifting · 22/07/2021 18:57

Basically I realised I want to be fitter and slimmer more than I want the cake.

Quite often in the past I'd crave a cake, eat it and not really enjoy it anyway.Too dry, too sickly. Same for chips, or wine, or toast. The craving is bigger than the pleasure of eating.
