Substituting carbs

I'm a traditional meat, carb, veg kind of cook but I'm trying to cut down for many carbs I'm having.
What do people substitute carbs for in this kind of meal that isn't just plain boiled/steamed veg?
I've found a few new recipes but they never tell you what to accompany them with, and sometimes I just can't be arsed to have to decide on that too!

For rice you could use cauliflower rice. Just put florets in a good processor and lightly fry before eating.
Spiralized courgette is a good spaghetti substitute.
Sweet potatoes (but limited - I could eat these non stop!)
Roasted veg is much nicer than plain steamed veg.
If I have plain veg eg. Green beans I'll put a homemade sauce on it.

Same here - sweet potatoes or cauliflower rice. I buy Asda steam bags of cauliflower rice, four minutes in the microwave, which I have when the rest of the family is having rice or

...or I'll add it to a small portion of pasta to bulk it out.

Walkingandatalking · 29/07/2020 23:14

Sweet potato contains nearly as much carbs as pasta and rice so I would count that out.

RainbowMum11 · 29/07/2020 23:21

I tend to bulk the carbs out to sort of trick me into thinking I'm eating full carbs, if that makes sense!
So I cook mixed veg in with the rice, if I'm doing mash I add in celeriac/swede/cauliflower etc
If spaghetti or noodles, mix with courgetti.
It makes me feel like I am having loads of carbs but actually I'm not and having extra veg to boot!

Absolutely not sweet potatoes!! They are higher in carbs than normal potato.

You need to get used to eating your meat with lots of green veg, preferably cooked in butter if you’re planning to do a low carb high fat diet. If I’m particularly hungry I might have half an avocado alongside my meal or some fried halloumi

FizzyPink · 29/07/2020 23:26

Otherwise if you’re having something like a curry or spaghetti bolognese just substitute the rice or pasta for a big bed of kale or spinach

Curries - roast cauliflower florets (Prefer over riced cauliflower)
Chinese - roast broccoli in sesame oil, garlic and soy
Beef dishes - including stews and chillis - any Steamed or boiled greens like broccoli and or green Beans
Trad dinners - cauli mash or cauli cheese (both can be done low carb)
Pasta dishes - spiralised courgette (buy a spiraliser)

Roast cauliflower is delicious and you can sprinkle herbs/spices over before cooking.
If making things like shepherds pie/fish pie etc I roast cauliflower then make mash.
Lots of recipes on line for things like keto naan if you like cooking.

I've been doing virtually no carb based on a nutrition plan and actually I have been eating much smaller meals without feeling hungry. I think the trick is to get the right sort of protein.

I have made parsnip / carrot / butternut squash chips in air fryer when I want the 'feel' of potatoes.

relievedlady · 31/07/2020 07:09

I do Low carb but fill up on good protein and natural fats so don't ever feel like I'm missing out and stay full.

chromis · 31/07/2020 07:44

I use finely sliced sweetheart cabbage (cooked in microwave) goes nicely with stirfry, hotpot, bbq meat or grilled meat like pork steaks

Increase the fat content and eat s...l…o...w...l...y. Chew your food very well and pause between mouthfuls. Enjoy the taste and the texture. Eating slowly allows your brain to 'catch up' with your stomach and recognise that you have eaten a satisfying amount. Fat keeps you feeling satisfied for longer - I often have a generous dollop of Hellmans full-fat mayo with every dish.
