How to make celery taste nice

Not overly keen on celery but somehow have ended up with two bags of it. What can I make other than soup with it?

Chop up finely and put into bolognaise, cottage pie etc - soften with the onions and you can barely tell it's there. Good way to bulk out a meal

SigridTheHaughty · 09/01/2020 09:29

Got any rabbits you can feed up? It's about the only way I know of getting edible foodstuff from celery.

SidSparrow · 09/01/2020 09:31

Puree it, divide it up into portions, freeze it! Then use it for soups, stews etc at a later date.

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 09/01/2020 09:33

It makes a nice soup.

Sforsh49 · 09/01/2020 09:38

Put it into casseroles. Or chop it up, chop a couple of carrots up, lay them in the bottom of a roasting dish, put a whole chicken on top of it and peel and par boil some potatoes and arrange around the edges. Bottle of cheapo white wine, fill the chicken cavity with it and then pour the rest over the chicken and potatoes (leave a small glass in the bottle or it doesn't always cook all the alcohol off) and cover with foil. Stick it in the oven like you would to roast a chicken normally and baste a couple of times and then take the foil off at the end for half an hour to brown the chicken. It's bloomin delicious and the veg is the best bit!!!

We had braised celery with dinner last night - it was delicious. Recipe was Delia's - found it online.

petrocellihouse · 09/01/2020 10:20

Cover it with a heap of home made chips. Eat the chips, then throw the celery in the bin. Grin

stripeypillowcase · 09/01/2020 10:25

chop it up and freeze in sauce/soup size portions.

SigridTheHaughty · 09/01/2020 10:33

But then the chips will be all celeryey :(

Very · 09/01/2020 10:35

dip it in smoked mackerel pate! My go-to lazy days lunch. Delicious and very keto and full of the good Omega 3 oils we're supposed to get more of.

Homemade is easy - flake some smoked mackerel fillets and add mayo/cream cheese/yoghurt/creme fraiche - whichever you like. A squeeze of lemon juice too.

Or the Linklaters one on Ocado is great but quite £££

petrocellihouse · 09/01/2020 11:07

@SigridTheHaughty good point. So possibly cut out the bit where you put the chips onto the celery and just bin it at that point, but keep the chips? That would work! Grin

milliefiori · 09/01/2020 11:13

Make sofritta with it. Fincely mince celery (you can peel off the stringy biuts with a veg peeler), onion and carrot then fryin olive oil on a low heat until soft. This is the most lovely base for so many dishes from spaghetti sauce to cottage pie, soups, casseroles, chillis, veggie bakes, pot roasts etc.

Palavah · 09/01/2020 11:15

Chop it up (very finely, if you like) and put it in salads

  • good with salmon, pea, mint, cucumber
  • quinoa, tomato, cucumber, pomegranate, parsley,
SigridTheHaughty · 09/01/2020 11:19

Perfect petro!

notacooldad · 09/01/2020 11:21

Fill the grove with crunchy peanut butter.

SaintGarbo · 09/01/2020 11:31

Add a touch of salt and eat it raw.

Clevs · 09/01/2020 11:51

If you want to eat it as it is it's nice with Primula spread down the middle of it.

petrocellihouse · 09/01/2020 12:00

@SigridTheHaughty - I'll be on Masterchef at this rate!

Todayisanewday75 · 09/01/2020 13:17

I already use it in stews but that’s only a couple of sticks and I have loads. No rabbits but do have chickens, will see if they like it.

I like the smoked mackerel pate idea. And I’m also now thinking it might be nice with baked camembert.

Paint it pink and tell the kids it's rhubarb?

Alicatz66 · 16/01/2020 17:59

Fill the groove with Boursin, Brie or Marmite peanut butter ! YUM !

rhowton · 16/01/2020 18:21

Add lots of cheese and then take away the celery... it will be delicious xxxx

CaptainPovey · 16/01/2020 18:28

Don't bother. Its rank

bluejayblue · 16/01/2020 18:58

Chop it into bite size pieces with equal quantity of chopped carrot cook for 5 minutes in chicken stock. Make a roux with butter and flour add chicken stock, make this into a cheese sauce with grated strong flavour cheese. Put celery, carrot and sauce in covered dish in oven for approx 40 minutes. This is a really tasty accompaniment to any roast dinner.

JemimaTab · 20/01/2020 19:42

I spread cream cheese on it - very nice! Also good as a dippy vegetable (with dip or pate).
