Low Carbing whilst pregnant

I didn't do the boot camp pre pregnancy but I dropped my carb intake to between 50g and 75g with one day a week between 75 and 100g. It worked for me in a sustainable way and I lost 9kg in 2 1/2 months. Since finding out I was pregnant the first 12 weeks all I could stomach was toast, crisps, crackers. Surprisingly though I'm now 21 weeks and still the same weight I was when I got the positive test.

I've tried to keep my carbs under control as that's what puts the weight on for me but it's getting difficult now.

So my question, those who have continued to low carb throughout pregnancy, have you had to alter what you do and still felt good, kept your weight in check? I still had 9kg to lose when I fell pregnant and I don't want to lose weight as such till the baby is here but I would like to keep a check on it.

Any advice, words of wisdom will be greatly received.

(MW is ok with me low carb-ing as long as I'm sensible and don't starve myself)

I think any type of dieting to lose weight in pregnancy is not recommended, however, I am low carbing at 30 weeks pg as I have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes and a low carb/low sugar diet is recommended. I have lost a few pounds doing it, but I can definitely spare them, whereas I’d you are slim to begin with it’s probably not a good idea. However, if you’re just doing it to maintain your weight or not put too much on, I don’t think it can hurt. There are loads of women with GD that have to low carb so it cant be bad for the baby.

When I was pregnant, my obstetrician told me not to put on any weight, which obviously meant that once I gave birth, I'd be lighter. So losing weight is recommended if you need to!

You're not starving yourself as long as you're eating other things. Nobody actually needs carbs.

I ate low carb throughout my last pregnancy. I ate more carbs than usual during the first trimester due to nausea but once that stopped I went back to moderate low carb - around 50g per day. It certainly didn't stop me putting on weight while pregnant but I'm sure I was in better metabolic shape at the end of the pregnancy and I was able to lose the baby weight again over the next few months.

Thanks StuntNun I don't want to lose weight whilst pregnant, but I find when I eat carbs my whole system for a sluggish. I certainly feel better/brighter when I low carb. It's good to hear you did it through pregnancy too. I'm not too hard on myself if I have treats, but I've had two weeks of eating out loads and I just feel meh. It's snacks I struggle with, main meals are ok bit since being pregnant I need a few snacks in the day too.
