I red this book and it blew my mind. Why didn't I know about this book earlier. I would love to hear your thoughts if you've read it, especially on calories and why we shouldn't go calorie deficient.

Have a look at low carb diet. There's a book called carbs and cals. Don't go above 100-120 carbs a day. That's what I'm doing. Just started.

I listened to it on audible. Loved it.

Funnily enough, I just started reading it the other day. So far what I know is that he's utterly contemptous of the 'calories in calories out' myth. It is amazing that it is STILL so heavily promoted and taken for granted, when it is a proven fact that it simply does not work.

Throrough critque.

IMHO I think no matter which eating regime you adopt you still need to create a calorie deficit in order to lose weight.

There’s no such thing as a free lunch.

You are only partly right here. It does matter what type of calories you put into your body. If you consume a very high carb diet, your insulin is constantly spiked and insulin's role is to push the glucose into your cells for energy, where it will STAY as fat if you continue fueling with carbs (which you will be craving because the body will want more and more), and eventually it will stop being able to remove the glucose from your blood stream altogether and you are likely to develop diabetes and /or insulin resistance.

If you eat your calories from a high fat, low carb diet, you will not have the insulin issue and furthermore you will also start stimulating your 'full' hormones more effectively and your appetite reduces.

So high carb = high hunger and need for more fast energy

High fat, low carb = hunger cravings go down, difficult to overeat

So in theory it is about calories surplus, but you are much more biologically driven to overeat if you get most of your calories from carbs

Yes!!! My most life changing (Audible) book I've ever read on nutrition and obesity. Changed my life on understanding why typical diets, low fat, calorie reduction and the food pyramid just done NOT work long term. So many reference, so many cited studies. It absolutely blew my mind. Now I understand obesity is a hormone condition and not a calorie condition, I'm in full control of my weight loss. I recommend this book and his videos on You Tube at every opportunity. Especially if you are Type 2 and have inflammation. I can't get enough of Dr Fung. I'm now reading Keto Clarity. My trousers are falling off with no calorie counting and no exercise. What's not to love.

@smackbangwhollop did you keep up with this approach? Thinking of giving it a go

Dr Fung is awesome. I follow his advice and love his YouTubes.

Yes I love this book - I found it so good at explaining the biology. The only drawback to having read it is the frustration of knowing how wrong calorie deficit is and having to listen to other people tell me it’s all about calories in calories out. I recently got a prediabetic diagnosis and re-read it to help me make some lifestyle changes and it was so helpful. Also a bit I’d forgotten about peri-menopause hormonal changes increasing weight gain. I also like Why We Get Fat and What to Do About it by Gary Taubes, although that’s a bit more technical and less everyday language.
