Can someone educate me on a low carbing question

I'm interested in doing it but I have a couple of questions.
Firstly if i was to cut out carbs such a bread pasta rice etc would i lose any weight by just doing that and just having more veg ? My diet is very heavy in those.
If not how do i get to the ketosis stage but by not being really really strict , I understand fruits are not allowed and some veg are carby which sounds really odd..
Thirdly do you experience any lightheadedness? Sometimes my blood sugar drops n then I feel like I need to have something sugary quickly .

Hi little Yes, I think you would still lose some weight. I think for ketosis, you would need to be under about 20gms of carbs but don't worry too much about that. Some people experience carb withdrawals (known as carb flu) but it passes in a few days. The thing about low carb is that your blood sugar remains stable.
Why not have a look at the low carb thread. There's loads of info and very knowledgable posters.
Good luck

There's a Bootcamp starting on Monday Grin. The thread will include details of which veg you can eat and which should be avoided. It's important to remember it's low carb, not no carb and the principle is that you get the limited amounts of carbs you need from a varied range of healthy vegetables. I definitely recommend signing up, or following the thread as people post recipe ideas, and motivational comments.

You don't cut all carbs with keto, you just need the overall daily amount to about 20grs carbs a day (not sure about the exact amount though). Things like pasta and rice are so carbs heavy that even if you cut just those you ll are big difference
Most fruits are ok with keto, if you google it it tells you which fruits are not appropriate

Look for keto recipes some are fantastic, you can actually have cheese on toast with the latter made of cauliflower bread. You can have fantastic coconut chicken curries with cauliflower rice, some of these are really yummy it just needs you to cook in different ways
Good luck

... and no, you don't feel lightheaded in the way you often do on a low calorie diet. Your blood sugar levels will fall initially, but then they'll stay low. The lightheaded, sick sort of feeling is caused by your blood sugar level falling, not by being low if that makes any sense, so as long as you don't cheat and send it back up again, you won't suffer that.

Have been very low carb for a couple of years now. I suggest you read 'wheat belly' and watch 'that sugar movie' or similar so you're mentally in the right place and armed with the science. I did it in ever decreasing spirals if you see what i mean. So week one stop the suagr and bread, week two no pasta, weeks three no potatoes and taught myself loads of keto recipes.

Lost two stone and feel tonnes better. Now i rarely touch heavy carbs at all and don't miss them. Drink tonnes of water and eat pink himalaya salt to keep your electrolytes balanced.

Ah I see thanks everyone il have a look at the thread . It seems a bit daunting but i will try .
Is the keto diet similar to low carbing then?

It's the same basic principle. All low carb ways of eating work by sending your body into ketosis - there are variations on whether you count carbs or just eat low carb foods freely; and also adding in specific foods to boost health or weightloss. The Bootcamp doesn't involve counting or measuring carbs - you can eat freely from the allowed foods, which makes life much simpler when you're cooking.

You can also look at the diet doctor website. It explains keto in easy terms

Ok thanks.. thing is if cut out bread pasta rice etc how would I lose weight if I'm not in ketosis?

Cutting out bread, pasta, rice and sugars would be what moves your body into ketosis - which is a fat burning mode. My not-very-scientific understanding is that your body will turn to carbohydrates you've eaten for energy before it starts using your fat reserves. If you don't provide the carbohydrate fuel, your body will go straight to your fat reserves for energy.

littleblackdress26 · 12/05/2018 18:23

Ah ok so I'm guessing it would be a slow weight loss compared to cutting out a lot more n doing a proper low carb boot camp style ?

Typically you get a bigger loss in the first week, as a result of your body's glucose reserves being drained. Thereafter it depends on how much you have to lose and factors such as age/level of activity which affect your rate of weightloss. It can be anything from 2lb a week on average to 1/2 lb a week on average.
