What do you snack on please?

I’ve got a 3yo and a newborn and am trying to cut down on carbs. I snack a lot at the moment as I am finding I don’t always have time to make proper meals for myself. I eat lots of sandwiches, not to mention the biscuits...

What (preferably delicious) things do you snack on which are low carb please?

Greek yoghurt is low carb, I think. Full of protein, keeps me full. I eat the 0% fat version

Lisette40 · 18/04/2018 19:44

Actually I have it for breakfast with fruit and oatbran, having mixed it the night before.

EllieMentry · 18/04/2018 19:46

Not sure about delicious but I keep a bowl of hard-boiled eggs at the ready to have as snacks. Very filling.

Justmuddlingalong · 18/04/2018 19:48

Cheese, olives, pepperami, tuna and mayo, lots of mashed up boiled eggs with a big dod of butter. If you've always got snacky bits in there's less chance you'll resort to the sandwiches. Lidl's full fat Greek yogurt is good.

Teeny tins of tuna mixed with mayo chopped cucumber and spring onion
Those little tandoori chicken fillets
A Herta frankfurter straight from the packet (although there was an argument on here on whether they were supposed to be eaten straight from packet. I have for years with no ill effects!)
I often make a crust less quiche and slice into lots of small slices for a quick snack
Salami
Ham
2 sticks of celery with a laughing cow smeared over them

Never nuts. I can't stick to 6 almonds or brazils. I end up troughing the lot.

Nakedavenger74 · 18/04/2018 19:57

Ooh my favourite is to shove 2 slices of streaky bacon in the grill until crisp and crunchy. V satisfying.

Sgtmajormummy · 18/04/2018 20:09

I’ve found a way to curb nut eating!. Brazil nuts are delicious and good for you. They contain selenium which combats ageing but the maximum dose is six per day. After that you risk metal poisoning. Shock So they’re the only nuts I buy now.

For snacking I have half a teaspoon of chia seeds. Keep chewing at them and they get bigger and bigger in your mouth... Good for a feeling of satiety without actually consuming much.

Celery sticks filled with peanut butter
Chorizo and baby tomatoes
Cucumber sticks and hummus
Chopped red pepper stirred into soft cheese on Ryvita
Ryvita and marmite with sliced cucumber
Pickled gherkins straight from the jar!

DanceDisaster · 18/04/2018 20:38

Oh thanks all!

Some nice ideas.

Shock at the Brazil nuts metal poisoning! I never knew that.

Might be a bit niche but I love the little tins of mussels or oysters in oil.

Lisette40 · 18/04/2018 20:58

Never knew about the selenium danger. Will curb my Brazil nut consumption!

whingeyarse · 19/04/2018 09:42

Stating the obvious... but ryvita aren't low carb!

DH has bought some pickled eggs...I'm intrigued!

Nakedavenger74 · 19/04/2018 10:05

Nor hummus

MizCracker · 19/04/2018 10:22

If you want to do strict low carb for weight loss (I did after having my second baby and it was fantastic) then agreeing with those saying that ryvita and hummus aren't low carb. Nor is peanut butter or any nut, strictly speaking. Take a look at the low carb bootcamp section on here.

Also, when you are established with a low carb diet, you will honestly find that you don't need to snack, because your blood sugar is no longer shooting up and down. I loved how energised I felt - no longer desperate for sugar come 3pm.

Once I lost the weight I've been eating semi low carb ever since. I just allow myself cake and McDonalds when I feel like it Grin

DanceDisaster · 19/04/2018 10:37

Thanks. Yes, I’ve done the very LCHF diets before and they work a treat. I’m not quite in the market for one of those just yet though. Just want to reduce carbs and have fewer carb heavy snacks.
