Hi all,

I want to try a low carb diet - I’m setting myself an initial goal of losing 10kg but I’m a size 18uk so need to lose more in the longer term

I have a Fitbit which I can use to track my intake. Would it work for me to set myself a daily calorie target and try to aim towards proportions on carbs, protein and fat? I’ve read somewhere that 10% carb is a good level to aim for? Has anyone had any success or got any tips that might help?

My weaknesses are wine and savoury snacks - and I tend to graze rather than eating meals when I’m busy. I think that trying to get into a better routine of meals will be a big help. Another factor is my daughter is a recovering anorexic so we don’t have low fat anything in the house, and she’s quite triggered by diet talk. I have in mind that if I can eat the nuts etc that she needs but tweak my carbs it will be easier to manage, during the week it’s just the two of us at home. It’s quite hard to try to balance keeping her on track but also not letting it be at the expense of my own health, which has been a problem for the last couple of years.

Any advice or pointers for things to read would be much appreciated.

Thank you xxx

Hi, I’m sorry to hear about your daughter, very stressful for you, I hope she is recovering at a steady pace.

I have never got on with those websites, I would suggest choosing which LCHF diet to follow, you have the bootcamp here or Atkins is also free, just make sure you go on the uk one. The forum on Atkins is quiet but you will always get an answer to a question and the website is very informative, it’s does say in the different phases section what your macros should look like if that helps. There is also Diet Doctor.

You will need to skip the wine, change to vodka and Diet Coke!

If you are concerned about low fat and obvious diets, come across and join us on the Boot Camp threads (currently on Week 5) in the Boot Camp Diet topic.

Plenty of butter and fat, cheese, full fat Greek yoghurt on this WoE. And it's easy for you to serve rice and potatoes for your dd alongside your own food, if that's what she needs to be eating.

Mumsnet Boot Camp doesn't encourage calorie counting or even target carb intake. The whole point of it is that it is simple if you follow the Rules (only 10 of them iirc). They're in the spreadsheet of fabulousness that is in the OP of each week of Boot Camp. (sorry, can't link as I'm on the App).

No wine for the first 2 weeks but thereafter red and dry white wine or spirits like gin or vodka are allowed in moderation and as long as you realise that they will slow your weight loss_ (but at least they don't knock you out of ketosis).
