Low-carb and Ketogenic During Pregnancy

Hello - I'm very fat and pregnant.

I'm trying to keep my weight gain down and so far I've not put anything on but I'm only 15 weeks.

I've had success using keto diets in the past to lose fat and I wondered if anyone here used keto during pregnancy?

The health of the baby is of course of paramount importance so I wanted to know if anyone had any advice about low carbing during pregnancy and any knowledge surrounding its safety. I've googled but there's a lot of conflicting info out there.

Thanks.

I don't have any personal experience with keto while pregnant as I've only been doing it since I had my last child but the site that I trust the most is dietdoctor.com
I would have a read on there and see what they say about it. I suppose if anyone develops gestational diabetes while pregnant the advice would be to eat low carb so I don't see the difference. Being overweight and pregnant and risking getting GD would probably be more risky than staying keto.
Good luck I'll check back and see what other advice you get.

The advice for GD is low GI, not low carb. Second having a look at diet doctor.

Please see your GP & / or midwife for guidance on weight management during pregnancy.
Intuitively, losing through ketosis during pregnancy doesn't seem like a good idea to me (I'm not medically qualified so can only go with my limited personal knowledge).

Good luck, OP, I wish you a safe & happy pregnancy.

Thanks all - I have looked at Dietdoctor which is a fab resource and espouses low carb and even keto for healthy pregnancies from several respected experts.

GPs and midwives age singularly useless for weight loss advice in my experience. All are still recommending high carb, lower fat. Even the NHS website recommendations for GD are bizarre - still recommending starchy foods which play havoc with blood sugar.

My main concern is no excess weight gain rather than weight loss so I'll be prudent but I think low carb seems to be the way to go.

Thank you for the replies.

If you want to play it safe then aim for 50-100g carbs per day which is low carb but not ketogenic.
