Just realised I've been wrong about 'instant' oats- need new breakfast ideas

I've been on low-carb diet for a few years and pretty much always have porridge oats for breakfast (with seeds and berries), confident in my belief that oats are a good slow-release energy food. I've never given my breakfast a second thought.

I've read a few books on sugar and last year I read the Dr Michael Mosley one. In it he writes that if you're going to have oats have the 'steel cut' kind, not the instant oats. 'Oh yes', I thought, 'I'm fine as I don't have instant porridge'. I assumed 'instant oats' refers to those little packets of oats that are microwaved - the oat so simple stuff - as I knew they contained added sweeteners and so on. I therefore assumed that the plain porridge oats I buy must be this steel-cut stuff.

I've just found out that I'm completely wrong Blush 'Instant' oats are the kind I've been eating - bog-standard porridge. Steel-cut oats look more like chewy rice grains - nothing like the stuff I've been eating all these years. And a quick Google tells me that steel-cut oats have a lower glycemic load than the normal oats.

Oops.

Time to switch to eggs for breakfast!

Does anyone have any breakfast ideas please?

Can't you get steel cut oats?

Spinach smoothies?
Omelettes?

DragonRojo · 28/07/2016 08:12

If you have been doing it for a few years, and it is suiting you, why do you feel you need to change? Sorry, I know it is not what you are asking for, but it was my first thought. In answer to your question, I love eggs with smoked salmon for breakfast

FionaThePrincess · 28/07/2016 08:32

Well I am still a little overweight - not hugely, but around a stone. So maybe cutting out the instant oats would help. I have PCOS as well, which is what I put that last stubborn stone down to.

The steel cut oats don't look very appealing Grin and it would be nice to have a change. Eggs with salmon sounds lovely.

Another low carber here, I enjoy smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, but my favourite breakfast is bacon, mushroom and spinach, omelettes or whatever meat/ veg is left over from last nights dinner.

We don't really need different food for breakfast, think that's mostly an invention of the people selling cereal.

Patterkiller · 28/07/2016 08:37

Greek yogurt with berries.

CoffeeAndOranges · 28/07/2016 08:40

I think in this country steel cut oats are sold as oatmeal. Mornflake sell small bags of it. It's what is traditionally used to make porridge with in Scotland I believe.

I keep a bag in should the desire to make Yorkshire parkin seize me...not low carb at all...

I don't know anything about Moseley, but would agree with PP, "normal" porridge should not prevent you to lose that stone, if you don't eat tons of it (I have 3 tablespoons plus Koko plus half an apple) and don't put sugar in it.
I'd look more closely at lunch and dinner to shed the weight.

I did eat those porridge oats ages ago when I lived in Germany, you can't compare them to the 'normal' oats and they are quite expensive. I hated eating them, but they went into a musli, with lots of other stuff.

This might fly in the face of other advice - but how about no breakfast?

I've been doing this most days the last couple of months (previously a cereal/oats eater) after reading a couple of comments in a newspaper article - and I find that if I don't eat breakfast I don't feel any hungrier mid/late morning than if I do eat it. (I've lost some weight - but also been doing general better eating / less carbs / more moving mission, so can't say it's all down to that, though it def feels like it has helped)

You might not miss it, find you don't fully compensate with bigger lunch etc, and the calorie deficit might slowly lose that stone over the next year?

total full-fat yoghurt with berries and grated hazelnut
poached eggs on rye?
scrambled eggs
green smoothie

FionaThePrincess · 28/07/2016 09:27

Newbie here watching for breakfast ideas. How about grilled mushrooms and feta? Avocado with chipotle sauce and lime? Struggling with savoury for breakfast myself...

RJnomore1 · 11/08/2016 07:27

Sorry but I call bullshit - oats are oats no matter how they are cut, as long as there is no additives. Unless I am missing something?

Penfold007 · 11/08/2016 07:40

No need to give up your porridge, Irish oats are steel cut. My favourite type are the Flahvans brand which you can buy online but I can buy the locally in Waitrose, Sainsburys, Tesco or ASDA. Lots of yummy tips up thread on alternatives though.

ICJump · 11/08/2016 09:46

I use non instant oats. Cover in water and pop in the microwave for 90 seconds.
Job done

ocelot41 · 11/08/2016 20:29

I am a bit concerned about cholesterol actually. I am a bit on the high side and am eating quite a bit of fat to keep the hunger pangs at bay. Can I expect my cholesterol to go even higher or to drop once my weight drops?

MaryMargaret · 22/08/2016 20:19

I tend to have fried mushrooms and egg, with lots of salt and pepper - yum. Luckily I work from home so tend to get a few chores done &/or go for quick walk then eat around 9 when I'm hungry enough for a cooked breakfast

The Difference Between Steel-Cut, Rolled, & Instant Oats
The difference between steel-cut, rolled, and instant oats is simply how much the oat groat has been processed. This also results in each variety having a distinct texture and varying cook times.

One Surprising Thing These Oats Have in Common
While these varieties have undergone a different level of processing, resulting in different textures and cook times, there is one thing they all have in common: nutritional value. Steel-cut, rolled, and instant oats all have the same nutritional profile since they're all made from whole oat groats.

I have a hard boiled egg. Take it to work and have it there for breakfast or I have Greek yoghurt.

Rowenag · 23/08/2016 07:34

I have an Atkins ready made shake which I buy ready made from chemists or supermarkets every day for breakfast. It is low calorie and filling and sets me up for the day. Really convenient too. I have recently lost 4 stone by having two of these a day and one meal but when I get to my goal (one more stone to go) I will probably stick with my breakfast one and have two meals a day to maintain my weight. Obviously you could make your own protein shake too if you don't like the idea of shop bought.
